UCLA Center for Digital Health Strengthens Partnerships to Deliver Data Science Award

Hearst Health has formed an alliance with the Center for SMART Health at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), to offer an award in Data Science.

Center for Smart Health at UCLA is an interdisciplinary and collaborative center with the purpose of transforming health care using data and emerging technologies. On the other hand, Hearst Health is a leading health care company, which is also the organizer of the Hearst Health Prize.

The Hearst Health Prize has been promoting programs and interventions that improve health services as we know them for more than 6 years. This award has focused on population health programs, however, with the UCLA partnership, in 2022 the award will be reformed and will focus on rewarding data science initiatives that demonstrate a positive impact on health .

"Our award provides a national platform to showcase how data science is making a difference in patients' lives," said Gregory Dorn, president of Hearst Health.

On the other hand, the Center for SMART Health was created in 2016, and specializes in the research, evaluation and application of Digital Health technologies, specifically those based on data that promote the prediction and reduction of disease risk. The Center for SMART Health has created a collaborative environment that stimulates personalized and advanced precision medicine for patients. Collaborations between faculty and partners, such as Hearst Health, will further this mission,” said Steve Dubinett, interim dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM) at UCLA.

In this sense, given the growth of research and initiatives that promote health care using new techniques such as Artificial Intelligence, the award seeks to provide incentives for this type of innovation that improves decision-making for health professionals.

“The application of AI and data science to health care has reached a state of maturity where it is important to investigate approaches that have the greatest impact in generating health outcomes,” said Dr. Alex Bui, PhD, also co-director of the Center for SMART Health. He also emphasized that this collaboration with the Hearst health awards will promote the dissemination of best practices in the health sector.
