Regional Initiative To Eliminate Malaria

The Regional Initiative To Eliminate Malaria is a partnership between the countries of the Mesoamerican region and the Dominican Republic, with the support of the Inter-American Development Bank, the Carlos Slim Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS/HIV, Tuberculosis and Malaria, with the goal of eliminating malaria from the region in the coming years.

Among the goals agreed with the countries, the governments have committed to diagnose cases within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms and provide the indicated treatment within 24 hours of diagnosis, in order to reduce human transmission. This, combined with case investigation and implementation of appropriate mosquito control measures, is essential to achieve the goal of disease elimination.
