Peru: National Center of Telemedicine inaugurated in October, performed more than 428,000 services in 2020

EsSalud informed that they managed to carry out 3 million remote services within their Telehealth services, in addition the National Center of Telemedicine provided 428 thousand services since its inauguration at the end of October.

At the end of October 2020, the National Center of Telemedicine (Cenate) located in Lima was inaugurated by the government of Peru and the Social Health Insurance (EsSalud). It is currently equipped with 89 virtual consulting rooms to remotely attend patients from different regions of Peru, since it is connected to 61 care centers distributed throughout the country.

Cenate, which is coordinated by EsSalud Digital, provided in almost two months 428, 902 teleconsultations in different medical specialties. Of which the ones in greatest demand were cardiology, psychology, dermatology and endocrinology. According to information from Bernardette Cotrina, director of Cenate of EsSalud and Juan Carlos Bartolo, assistant director of Initiatives and Services in the same institution, the implementation of Cenate has represented savings of 25 million soles in printing of plaques, personnel in charge, and outsourcing of services for the attention in remote areas. Only one patient corresponding to another area, when referred to another medical center cost EsSalud about 2,000 soles.

On the other hand, EsSalud reported that during 2020 they provided more than 3 million 600,000 remote medical consultations through telehealth, and performed more than 652,000 follow-ups to monitor patients remotely.

Also, Cenate, even before the opening of its new facilities, was a key part from the beginning of COVID-19 infections in Peru by answering questions, monitoring cases and following up on suspicious cases, as well as offering urgent attention to at-risk populations. In addition, EsSalud reported that in the last 4 months of 2020, they carried out 36,245 teleconsultations of patients with COVID-19 and patients in their recovery process.
