Pregnant mothers in remote areas of Amazonas, Brazil, will receive care through telehealth and telemonitoring

The Federal University of Amazonas (Ufam), received funds of 5.5 million reais from the Ministry of Health, to carry out a project that will provide telemonitoring to pregnant women during the gestation process.

The Ministry of Health allocated funds for Ufam to carry out its prenatal telemonitoring project for high-risk obstetric patients. The project is focused on providing care in remote areas of the state of Amazonas.

The funds will be used to create a telemonitoring room, where health professionals will establish contact with specialists from Manaus, the capital of the state of Amazonas. The project will last 24 months.

This strategy has several objectives, such as providing care to high-risk patients; monitor prenatal pregnancy; and train health professionals in the 11 municipalities identified as priorities. The rector of Ufam, Sylvio Puga, explained that it is important for Ufam to expand telehealth actions for the benefit of the population.

“With this unprecedented project in Amazonas we hope to reduce maternal, fetal and neonatal mortality and morbidity. We believe that we are really bringing health through assistance and training to the municipalities that are identified as priority by death records. With the expected success, we intend to be able to serve other municipalities in a short time”, explained Ione Brum, professor at the Ufam School of Medicine.

On the other hand, the director of the Faculty of Telemedicine at Ufam, Edson Andrade, explained that the project will provide pregnant women in remote areas of the state with the opportunity to obtain care throughout the gestational period.
