Government of Chihuahua launches telemedicine program in the Sierra Tarahumara

The state health services and the Sanitary Region III, which covers the municipalities in the south of the state, began the telemedicine program in Balleza, a town located in the Sierra de Chihuahua.

The new telemedicine program promises to benefit the population by providing greater access to specialized medical care remotely. Balleza is a municipality in the south of Chihuahua where thousands of people of the Rarámuri ethnic group live, therefore, the project is mainly focused on them.

The program will have personalized medical care in real time in different specialties such as internal medicine, traumatology, gynecology and surgery. In addition to expanding access to medical services, another objective of this strategy is to reduce patient waiting time by taking advantage of the use of technology.

Likewise, thanks to the implementation of telemedicine, patients who require any of the available medical specialties will be able to save on transportation costs.

The service will have the support of doctors at the site where medical care is provided, who will be in charge of connecting remotely with a specialist doctor to establish communication with the patient.

It should be noted that, in November of last year, Health Region III had implemented a telemedicine program in the municipality of Jiménez, incorporating services with specialists in pediatrics, internal medicine, gynecology, orthopedics, surgery, and urology.

In this way, the advancement of telemedicine in the state of Chihuahua continues in areas with greater difficulties in accessing health services, especially the towns and municipalities located in the mountain area.
