The IDB published a study on international telemedicine in Latin America

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), carried out a study that identifies the main issues related to the development of telemedicine in Latin America, such as policies, regulatory and legal aspects, health problems, among others.

This study was carried out by Dr. Francesc Saigí-Rubió and Dr. Joan Torrent-Sellens, as Principal Investigators, as well as Dr. Noemí Robles, José Pérez Palaci and María Isabel Baena, all belonging to the Open University of Catalonia (UOC ).

The authors propose as a general hypothesis that the development of a comprehensive study on international telemedicine in Latin America will help to know the factors, barriers and facilitators for the implementation of this type of programs and thus establish new roadmaps that enhance the factors. of success and manage to do away with the most common limitations.

On the other hand, the main objective of the study was: "To study the factors of adoption and development of telemedicine at a national and international level among different health services in Latin America and allow reorienting care towards a comprehensive system centered on the patient. and based on interoperability”.

So the main objectives were focused on identifying issues such as policies, regulatory and legal aspects, as well as the main health problems that can be addressed through telemedicine.

The project methodology was divided into two phases: first, the identification of the issues mentioned above; and second, the identification of factors that promote or weaken the development of telemedicine in the region.

For the first method, a literature review was carried out in PubMed with the terms "telemedicine" and "global health", without restricting the time frame or type of publication. The language of the publication was limited to English. On the other hand, the second methodology was qualitative descriptive-interpretative through semi-structured interviews with actors from different countries, on the use and usefulness of telemedicine.
