From January to December 2021, health services at the state level recorded more than 8 million telehealth actions.
The Telehealth Observatory of the National Center for Technological Excellence in Health (CENETEC) published the 2021 annual report on Telehealth Actions, which highlights a total of 8,102,465 telehealth actions considering only state health services. This figure includes the number of visits and sessions performed by trained health personnel.
Regarding actions without patients, that is, distance training and coordination services, more than 680 thousand attendees were registered for remote education services and more than 273 thousand for distance service coordination through 19 thousand 231 and 18 thousand 235 total sessions respectively.
These telehealth actions are focused on training and updating the knowledge of professional health personnel who mainly work in medical units of the Federal Ministry of Health, according to CENETEC.
On the other hand, telehealth services with involved patients were divided into various categories, among which the following stand out:
- Remote COVID-19 medical advice with more than 1.3 million visits.
- Distance medical advice with more than 1.2 million.
- Monitoring of patients at distances with 1.1 million.
- Remote triage for COVID-19 with around 952 thousand attentions.
Regarding teleconsultations, 71 thousand 567 attentions and 8 thousand 807 teleinterconsultations were registered. This type of remote care is related to health promotion, prevention, triage, follow-up, and even specialized care, all with the aim of achieving timely care for patients and improving the response from the first contact, thus avoiding unnecessary travel. .
In this sense, the report details that remote psychiatric consultations were the most used at the national level with more than 33 thousand, well above the 7 thousand 500 of internal medicine and 963 of surgery, the other types of specialty consultation more sued during 2021.
The progress of telemedicine and telehealth in Mexico continues its positive and accelerated path, since only five entities are not among the states that provided care through these modalities. One of them did not report actions, another is in planning and three entities have stopped their telehealth actions.
