Telehealth Network in Peru increased its remote consultations with children and adolescents this year

This year the National Institute of Child Health (INSN) San Borja, through the Telehealth Network reached 3,000 consultations since its creation in 2015. In addition, this network connects with more than 40 health centers across the country.

This year the Telehealth Network of the San Borja Institute of Health of the Child, located in Lima, Peru, managed to reach the figure of 3,000 attentions with teleconsultation modality. Since 2015 the Telehealth Network was established in this institute, however, the promotion in the use of this modality happened in 2020.

This year, care through this telehealth system increased their attention span by 40% benefiting not only children and adolescents from Lima, but patients from all over the country. This year INSN San Borja has conducted more than 700 remote consultations, most of which have been provided to patients in Lima, Piura, La Libertad, Junín and Ucayali.

According to hospital data, 60% of the total care performed this year corresponds to the period of the pandemic, from March to date. In addition, 121 children and teenagers have been referred to INSN San Borja to continue their medical care.

“We are providing remote medical care, advice and resolution to cases of high complexity through Telehealth and this has allowed us to save the lives of children and adolescents in the country during this period of COVID-19,” explained the director of the Research, Technology and Teaching Development Unit at Telehealth, Dr. Harry Suarez Anco.

Through the use of digital platforms, INSN San Borja specialists have offered consultations. In fact, they have made external consultations, to hospitals in other regions such as the Hospital de Santa Rosa de Piura in the specialty of plastic surgery. The most requested specialties are cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, neonatology, hematology and pediatric surgery.

In addition, the 3,000 children and adolescents served through this telehealth service during the period 2015-2020, represents a saving of more than 63 million soles for the Peruvian State.
