Google tool for pandemic management and immunization processes

Google Cloud Sentiment Analysis, proposes a COVID-19 open data repository, community mobility reports for the management of distancing measures, a tool for anxiety assessment, as well as virtual medical care, among other solutions.

Google launched a three-part strategic plan to support the management of vaccination campaigns, especially in the United States, one of which includes Google Cloud Sentiment Analysis, which they see as a foundation for successful mass vaccination strategies against COVID-19.

“The ability to assess constituent sentiment, within specific geographies or demographic communities, will be critical to executing vaccine distribution initiatives,” Google notes in its blog post.

Prior to starting vaccination campaigns, health services often carry out opinion analysis through surveys and polls. However, the information is not deepened. That is why, using a similar scheme, it is possible to take advantage of digital technologies to understand in a more detailed way the concerns of the population to be immunized. Immunization strategies could or even should include communication platforms such as call centers, websites, apps, chatbot, social networks, media campaigns, etc.

“Google Cloud Sentiment Analysis builds on the marketing data warehouse concept, and helps ensure anyone with a browser can read and make decisions on the data, from communications teams, to data analysts and public policymakers”. It is possible to learn how positively, neutrally or negatively the population views the vaccine and make changes to strategies depending on the results.

Google Cloud solutions are supported by U.S. state and local agencies as they have been part of their pandemic management strategies. Among these solutions are:

  • A COVID-19 open data repository, for Data Commons add-on, provides through an open-source resource a library of COVID-19 epidemiological data and other economic and demographic variables.
  • Community mobility reports, used by governments to manage mobility and social distancing policies in various countries around the world, including Mexico.
  • New virtual care functions facilitate access to virtual medical care.
  • An anxiety assessment tool, launched in partnership with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in the United States.
  • A COVID-19 search trend symptom dataset, through COVID-19 information search trends and symptoms, researchers can use this resource to study the most recurrent symptoms and the speed of spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
  • A virtual rapid-response agent to effectively connect patients with their physicians so they can share COVID-19-specific information.
