French pharmaceutical company joins forces with companies from various sectors to create a Digital Health ecosystem in Europe

A conglomerate of three French companies and one Italian company, from different sectors, has conceived a plan for the deployment of a Digital Health ecosystem in Europe.

The French pharmaceutical company, Sanofi, has announced that it will form a joint venture with three other companies from different industries and sectors such as insurance, telecommunications and technology consulting services, for the development of a digital health ecosystem. The initial investment contemplated is 24 million euros, and it will start operating in June 2021, in the first instance through a digital platform and later, in December 2021 a physical platform located in Paris. In addition, the physical headquarters has the backing of French President Emmanuel Macron through the PariSanté Campus initiative.

The physical ecosystem, will feature a creative lab, a Fab Lab, a Data Lab and a special Living Lab for patients and healthcare professionals to develop and test Digital Health solutions. It will also include a laboratory dedicated to ethics and economics. The project envisages the creation of a major strategy for the creation of a Digital Health ecosystem in Europe, which aims to bring together technological and scientific expertise from France and Europe, to enhance healthcare, and innovation in health.

As for the online platform, it is focused on bringing together experts in various areas, institutions, universities and hospitals, who are concerned about the use of digital tools in the health sector. It will also provide access to startups through special events.

“This project is the cornerstone of the open ecosystem centered on digital technology and healthcare data that we want to build with our partners. Our shared ambition is to bring together all the players, including startups, that will collectively invent the future of healthcare for the benefit of patients and thereby place France at the heart of European innovation in this strategic field”, explained Paul Hudson Sanofi’s CEO.

Initially, the initiative will focus on key situations and topics and will later give space to research on pathologies, technologies, population or public health, for greater depth. The four founding companies seek to align other large European companies and startups in a collaborative approach that promotes the emergence of new disruptive models.

The three pillars that will support this Digital Health project are the following, as mentioned on the website of the French technology services company, Capgemini:

  • The founding companies will share and pool their technologies, expertise and data with selected startups, in compliance with regulations and within an ethical and responsible framework, to support the implementation of digital solutions that improve the quality, security, accessibility and productivity of healthcare.
  • The multidisciplinary nature of the ecosystem will be embodied by the founding companies, the partner companies and around a hundred French and European startups, as well as other players in the healthcare, technology and insurance sectors, public and private hospitals, patient associations, regulators, schools and universities,
  • The development of concrete solutions to build tomorrow’s healthcare services, from the initial idea right through to making them available to patients and/or healthcare professionals. The strength of this alliance is based on the fact that the entire ecosystem will simultaneously focus on the same commitment, which will limit the dispersion of energy and increase the chances of success and creation of value for patients and the entire sector.
