April 7 World Health Day: Building a fairer, healthier world

World Health Day has been commemorated since 1950 to raise awareness of specific health issues that highlight areas of relevance according to the World Health Organization

This year under the theme of "Building a fairer, healthier world", World Health Day. The initial theme is inequality; however, this situation has been highlighted due to the health emergency by COVID-19. "some people are able to live healthier lives and have better access to health services than others - due to inequalities in their position, status and voice in society and the conditions in which they are born, grow, live, work and age," explains the World Health Organization (WHO). Also, 2021 has been designated as the International Year of Health and Care Workers (YHCW) by the WHO.

"This is not only unfair: it is preventable. That’s why we are calling on leaders to ensure that equity in health is the centerpiece of our COVID-19 recovery. This will result in a region where everyone has living and working conditions that are conducive to good health, where health information systems are configured to identify populations in situations of vulnerability, where civil society and individuals are partners in finding solutions where inequalities occur, and where everyone has access to health and health care without experiencing discrimination," the WHO said in its statement.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) will also hold a series of virtual events to commemorate World Health Day and health workers, where experts will meet virtually on issues of public health access, education, inequality, among other topics of global relevance.

Here is PAHO's agenda for World Health Day:
