Telemedicine care services provided to pregnant women in Peru

The National Maternal and Perinatal Institute (INMP) of the Ministry of Health (Minsa) in Peru began providing medical care to pregnant women living in remote areas of the Puno region.

The department of Puno in southern Peru is closely linked to Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. Around this important lake, there is a large intervention by the Itinerant Platforms of Social Action (PIAS), ships of the Peruvian Navy, which provide state services to rural and native populations to promote their development.

The telemedicine service has been promoted by the PIAS of the Naval Medical Center Cirujano Mayor Santiago Távara, of the Navy, and provides services to pregnant women in the Puno region in terms of diagnosis and treatment to reduce complications during pregnancy, childbirth and puerperium.

"At this moment we have carried out a teleconsultation with the patient Mariana, 29 years old, from Suana Island, district of Anapia, province of Yunguyo, in the Puno region. She has undergone an ultrasound to see the evolution of her pregnancy," explained the executive director of the Directorate of Sexual and Reproductive Health of the Minsa, Guillermo Atencio La Rosa.

Thanks to telemedicine, specialists can identify risk factors and identify complications during gestation and thus connect patients with the coordination of Lima to transfer the patient to a health facility and provide specialized treatment.

In this way it will be possible for specialists to detect pathologies, morbidity and other alterations in time for the patient to receive prompt attention.
