Bills on Digital Health advance in Argentina

The Circle of Legislators and the Autonomous University of Buenos Aires (UBA), will work together to develop bills in favor of Digital Health.

The Institute of Strategic Studies and International Relations (EERI) of the Circle of Legislators of the Nation, will work together with the Health Observatory of the Faculty of Law of the UBA. The objective is to develop bills that promote the regulation of the use of technological, electronic and digital tools in health, such as telehealth, Artificial Intelligence, among others.

The deputy Cristina Guevara highlighted the need to update the rules in the regulation of Digital Health, "in 2022 we are going to make concrete proposals to protect the rights of people and ensure universal access to technology that allows them to shorten distances and gaps that there is in health care”, he explained.

Dr. Marisa Aizenberg, director of the Health Observatory, explained that "although technology emerges as an equalizing and democratizing element in the face of inequities and access barriers, the lack of legislation discourages its use." He also added that in order to implement Digital Health services effectively, regulations that promote inclusive criteria based on ethical standards are necessary.

“Those of us who work in health see the advances that technology has brought; and these advances have also generated tensions that we must resolve: such as equity, democratization, protection of rights and that is where we must intervene by making decisions that must be reflected in laws and regulatory frameworks such as those that will be proposed in the 2022 agenda of the IEERI and the Circle of Legislators”, explained Dr. Claudio Mate, president of the Chamber of Deputies of the Nation.

Finally, the deputy, Horacio Pernasetti, also vice president of IEERI, explained that the challenge is to regulate the governance of the application of health technologies, so it will be necessary to ensure connectivity and coordination of the three levels of government in each locality.

In this way, in Argentina, next year, Digital Health will be debated in Congress as one of the main issues to legislate.
