Mount Sinai created the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Human Health

One of Mount Sinai's medical schools launched a department focused on the study of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in human health.

The Mount Sinai Health System is a network of hospitals founded in New York in 2013. One of its hospitals/campuses is the Icahn School of Medicine, which recently announced the creation of the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Human Health, the first in its type in medical school and colleges in America.

The mission of the new department is “to lead the transformation of healthcare powered by artificial intelligence through innovative research, apply that knowledge to treatment in hospital and clinical settings, and provide personalized care for each patient.” This is intended to expand Mount Sinai's impact on its health system, and globally.

“The Mount Sinai AI Company and its collective entities will be the connective tissue that links and integrates our work across the health system as we collaborate strongly with all of our institutes, departments and centers to deliver phenomenal patient care,” explained Thomas J. Fuchs, who will serve as Dean of Artificial Intelligence and Human Health and is also Co-Director of the Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Health at Mount Sinai.

The new department promises to boost the use of AI and machine learning in the eight hospitals belonging to Mount Sinai. Seeking to develop tools to make more accurate diagnoses of diseases, as well as test and create new treatments.

In addition, the new department will feature a renovated four-story space equipped with computer work areas, as well as virtual and augmented reality tools. They are currently in the recruitment phase of researchers, scientists, doctors and students related to the field of research on AI in health.
