The use of Twitter for the dissemination of medical journal articles

Medical journals use Twitter to disseminate research articles and promote medical research with strategies that seek to increase their reach and impact.

It was published in the The Journal of Medical Internet Research a study entitled "The use of Twitter by medical journals: systematic review of the literature", aimed to conduct a systematic review of scientific articles to synthesize and describe the different Twitter strategies used by medical journals and their effectiveness in the impact of magazines and reader metrics.

The method used was a systematic search of the literature before February 2020 in four electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and ScienceDirect). The research articles collected were reviewed through PRISMA guidelines.

Through the search, he was able to identify 44 research studies that evaluated the strategies of medical journals implemented on Twitter.

“Key findings suggest that Twitter post promotion improves alternative and citation-based metrics for academic medical journals,” the authors explained.

Four key Twitter strategies were identified and implemented by various medical journals: tweeting the article title and link, infographics, podcasts, and creating monthly Internet journal clubs.

Although they were unable to define which of the four strategies was more effective, because different metrics were used to measure them, the authors recommend that journals and researchers incorporate a combination of strategies for greater impact. In this way they will be able to capture audiences with different learning methods.
