Advances in Digital Health presented at CES 2021

CES 2021, one of the most important technological events in the world, was held this year virtually from January 11 to 14. It showcased various alternatives in Digital Health, especially tools to continue fighting the pandemic.

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2021 was held for the first time in its entirety virtually, due to the pandemic. Over the years CES has been the leading platform for introducing new products and showcasing revolutionary inventions. The 54th edition of this event was characterized, more for defining current technological trends, such as wearables, e-commerce, streaming and of course, Digital Health.

Digital Health was one of the most relevant topics during the virtual conferences that took place at the event, below, we will show some of the main innovations and trends in Digital Health, mobile health, as well as telemedicine and Artificial Intelligence that were approached at CES 2021.

One of the winners this year was Epsy Health, a free app, which is available on en App Store and Play Store and specializes in improving the quality of life of patients suffering from epilepsy. Among its features are: The monitoring of epilepsy attacks through the registration of adverse effects of medications, or indicators such as stress, lack of sleep, anxiety, among others; the registration of medications and treatments, as well as reminders to take them and their possible side effects; the option to obtain results, data and graphs to show them to the doctor in consultation to facilitate joint decision-making.

In addition, it has clinical and medical research articles on epilepsy, to keep users informed about the latest scientific news on their condition and the advances reported. Additionally, it can be connected to devices such as smart watches for greater accuracy. Epsy was awarded at CES 2021, as the best innovation in health and wellness, as well as the best innovation in software and mobile applications.

Another innovation presented during CES was VitalSight, a medical kit for home, which has a monitor to measure blood pressure, however, the important feature of this product is that it allows connection with the doctor, so that he can know the data and analysis that the software provides.

On the other hand, in terms of innovation in wearables, the Japanese startup Quantum Operation, presented during CES 2021, a smart bracelet developed for monitoring blood glucose. It is a non-invasive device that measures glucose levels above the skin, without the need for needle pricks. This is a useful tool for diabetic patients. According to Kazima Kato, director of the startup, the technologies allow healthcare companies to compile macro data and provide better solutions for disease control and management.

Similarly, in terms of home monitoring devices, HealthyU presented a complete system for the control and monitoring of heart disease signals, which includes a temperature sensor, a pulse oximeter, microphones to record the sounds of the lungs and heart, as well as a heart rate monitor and a blood pressure sensor. All of these features have been developed to work in a small device.

This device is ideal for the remote care of patients with cardiac problems, which only needs to be placed on the chest and the fingers and thumbs placed to start measuring the vital signs mentioned above. In the context of the pandemic, it is important to highlight these types of devices that promote health care at home.

Also presented was iSyncWave, which is still in the development phase. It is a device for performing electroencephalograms at home, through a helmet that could detect early signs of dementia and Alzheimer's disease through brain mapping. In addition, this technology will include LED-based therapy for dementia, Parkinson's, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and other neurological conditions.

The Dutch company Philips also presented a special monitoring kit for ICU, the device is placed on the chest and is capable of measuring respiratory rate, heart rate, posture, among other vital signs.
