Retirees and pensioners in Argentina to benefit from telemedicine platform

The Comprehensive Medical Care Program (PAMI), of the National Institute of Social Services for Retirees and Pensioners in Argentina, announced the launch of a telemedicine platform for remote medical care of affiliates.

The Argentine government, through Santiago Cafiero, Chief of Cabinet, announced the launch of a telemedicine platform to promote and guarantee remote medical care for PAMI affiliates. The announcement included an agreement with the Ministry of Productive Development and National Bank to provide healthcare personnel with new computer equipment.

"The pandemic has accelerated projects that were already planned, such as the case of telemedicine, which is one of the disciplines that, for obvious reasons, has intensified during the past year", said Cafiero, on the importance of telemedicine during the current health emergency.

The objective of the PAMI Telemedicine Program "is to strengthen the remote health care channels for affiliates. By means of a computer, cell phone or tablet, the member can hold a confidential, safe and effective video consultation with his/her physician or family doctor and carry out the usual follow-up of non-urgent consultations".

The program seeks to promote the use of information technologies by the PAMI medical community, for the management of medical care, through the use of digital medical prescriptions, the exchange of digital files such as studies or clinical analysis and other recommendations.

Luana Volnovich, PAMI's executive director, explained that the new platform, used by PAMI's network of 9 thousand general practitioners, "will make it possible to monitor health and it is very important to strengthen this action with credits for computers, since many doctors, as they acquire new responsibilities in terms of technology, have to change their equipment. We are sure that this program will allow us to make PAMI more federal".

The Minister of Productive Development, Matías Kulfas, highlighted the importance of telemedicine, but ruled out that it is not a replacement for traditional visits to the doctor: "telemedicine does not replace but complements medical attention and follow-up, and that is why we must ensure that this technology arrives in accessible conditions, such as the 12 percent interest rate and payment in three years, which makes the purchase viable to be able to provide this type of remote services".
