Digital tool developed by Google eases preparation for doctor's visits

It is a ten-question questionnaire designed to make patients aware of their goals and priorities in a medical practice. The tool was developed by Google Health, in conjunction with the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).

Doctor appointments can be confusing or insufficient for some people, which is why this new tool seeks to improve the patient experience in their medical practices. Google has partnered with the Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) AHRQ to create this digital tool that will help patients establish a doctor visit plan through a questionnaire.

“Patients who prepare for medical visits by prioritizing their questions, strengthen their role as members of their own health care team,” explained Jeffrey Brady, director of the Center for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety at AHRQ. Dr. Brady also emphasized the usefulness of this tool for physicians to maximize their consultation time and for patients to get the information they need. "Clinicians appreciate that healthcare can be more efficient, effective, and higher quality when they work together with patients,” he concluded.

This tool protects user information by not collecting any of the user's responses. When the questionnaire is completed, the results can be emailed or even printed out to take to the doctor's appointment.

Despite being in a pilot phase, this project is backed by AHRQ, as it is similar to the Question Builder project, an application developed and launched by the same agency in March 2019, which served a similar purpose to this new tool. It is currently available only on a limited basis to some users in the United States, however, they expect to expand this service to more users in the coming months.
