Costa Rican Social Security Fund incorporates social determinants in its Single Digital Health Record (EDUS)

The public health system of Costa Rica, reinvented the way to register its users and included a category to add to the entire Afro-descendant population living in the area, this with the objective of providing them with more specialized attention.

The Unique Digital Health Record (EDUS) of Costa Rica, added an option within its system to include and organize all ethnic groups living in different regions of the area.

The variable "ethnicity", introduced by the Costa Rican Social Security Fund, will allow the design of strategies and treatments focused on the Afro-descendant population to focus their well-being on a set of efforts supported by technology and Digital Health.

It is expected to cover the entire country with the public health system and, consequently, reduce the access gap by making it more equitable and available to anyone without exception.

The intervention may be timely and with advanced quality thanks to the appropriate tools to determine epidemiological, therapeutic profiles, antecedents, radiological examinations, allergies and laboratory tests.

It should be remembered that the purpose of EDUS is to establish the necessary mechanisms of action for the development of planning, financing, provision of supplies and resources that make possible a complete and comprehensive system that plans the clinical history of each patient and is available in a way digital on from any platform, place and time.

According to studies obtained by the Caja Costarricense, 11 thousand 200 people of Afro-descendant ethnicity are attached to EDUS and only 8 thousand 700 make use of this digital tool.
