Digital Platforms a relief for education in COVID-19 times

Following the global health emergency by the COVID-19 pandemic, educational institutions, students and teachers have had to adapt to new types of learning.

Following the announcement by WHO on 11 March, which declared the COVID-19 outbreak as a pandemic. According to UN data, more than 1370 million students globally had to leave the classroom to continue their distance education.

This led to the mass adoption of distance education methods and other digital platforms by students and teachers.

At the beginning of April, Zoom a videoconference platform reported that in March 10 million users were to exceed 200 million users in just three weeks.

On the other hand, Google announced that Meet, its video conferencing platform, which requires a monthly or annual subscription, will be available for free until September 30. This after being used more than 100 million times over the past week.

Another Google platform is Classroom, a free and fully focused on the education platform, its function is to manage classes, it is a tool created in 2014 and can be used for distance education, ideal for the current situation.

In addition, UNESCO published a list of resources to help parents, teachers, educational institutions, facilitate learning at home, in this period of isolation. Most platforms support multiple languages. They are categorized based on the needs of specific groups or situations

It Includes resources to provide psychosocial support, management systems for digital learning, systems for mobile phones, systems with offline operation, MOOC platforms (Massive Open Online Courses), Content for self-taught, reading applications for mobile phones, video conferencing and direct communication platforms, Tools for teachers in the creation of digital content and finally repositories on distance learning.

Equally important, in Mexico the Ministry of Public Education enabled public TV channel 14.2 as an educational platform for middle school and high school students at weekly schedules (https://www.televisioneducativa.gob.mx/)
