World Health Organization launches digital anti-tobacco campaign through Artificial Intelligence

The platform allows you to have a conversation about tobacco addiction issues with a Bot that works through artificial intelligence.

The platform works in the same way as a video call, in which the user has the opportunity to speak face-to-face with the development of Artificial Intelligence that takes shape in a woman named Florence.

“I want to talk to you about the harms of using tobacco, including smoking. It's more important than ever to quit during this on-going COVID-19 pandemic and I'm here to help. I can teach you proven techniques to help you quit, tell you why quitting is a good idea, and more”, says Florence.

To start talking you need to activate the camera and microphone of your device, however, you don't need to talk as the platform also has a chat box where it displays various options.

When questioning the reasons for quitting tobacco, the Bot yields a number of benefits that comes with quitting the cigar: The benefits of quitting tobacco are felt almost immediately. It increases your chances of a longer life and also saves significant sums of money. When you quit smoking:

  • Within 20 minutes, your heart rate and blood pressure drop.
  • 12 hours, the carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal.
  • 1-9 months, coughing and shortness of breath decrease.
  • 1 year, your risk of coronary heart disease is about half that of someone who smokes.
  • 5 years, your stroke risk is reduced to that of a nonsmoker 5 to 15 years after quitting.

After giving a number of benefits, Florence provides a guide with a plan to quit smoking, for this she previously asks the user to choose a date to start leaving this addiction within a two-week range. After this it takes a number of steps to follow:

  • I will remove tobacco products from my home, work, and other environments I frequent.
  • I will tell people about my intention to quit.
  • I understand that there will be challenges. I may experience nicotine withdrawal, I may feel tense or anxious and an urge to use tobacco. I will remember that quitting gives me long-term health benefits.
  • I will remember that if I use tobacco after tomorrow, I did not fail. I successfully tried. And I can successfully try again.
