Use of Digital Platforms
Digital Health Portfolio by UNAM and Carlos Slim Foundation

This Digital Platform was presented at the UNAM Facilities, an initiative of the Carlos Slim Foundation and the Faculty of Medicine of the University that aims to provide comprehensive solutions to facilitate the daily practice of health professionals and improve the quality of care. More than 9,000 graduate doctors will benefit from this technology.

On August 22nd, the official presentation and the launch of the Digital Health Portfolio was held in the auditorium "Dr. Raoul Fournier Villada" belonging to the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the official presentation and the launch of the Digital Health Portfolio.

The platform was developed by the Carlos Slim Foundation in conjunction with the University to provide graduates of the Faculty of Medicine with a world of information and practical tools to improve health care and increase the quality of life among the inhabitants of all Mexico and Latin America; in the same way it is intended to carry out studies focused on knowing a little what graduates do when they arrive in the labor market.

Dr. Enrique Fajardo Dolci, who serves as director of the Faculty of Medicine of UNAM, thanked the people who gathered (including academics, media and students) and briefly explained the picture and context for the creation of this platform.

He mentioned that there had already been a project at the University to share a digital portfolio, but that it could not be maintained because of the costs involved.

During the time of the event, the general objective was addressed: to offer those who finish their professional training a set of instruments that can help them to practice their profession with better professionalism and quality, as well as help them find opportunities "because you learn medicine, but you do not learn how to exercise it”.

Carlos Slim Foundation director, Robert Tapia Conyeremphasized "technological trends and how new technologies maximize the capabilities of health personnel." In addition, he mentioned that the platform is an important concept within the Digital Health age in which it is currently being lived and disclosed that the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended countries to evolve towards these new platforms, as innovations in Digital Health account for 30% of the resources being invested internationally.

It focused on the pillars and trends that follow globally in these types of projects: the world in the cloud (moving from paper to virtual storage of information), digital platforms (access by cell phone, tablet or computer), the Internet of Things (the connection between all the people of the world to access the same information regardless of time or place) and Big Data (the use of Artificial Intelligence to perform processes and techniques with greater efficiency and speed thanks to data science).

Also involved was the director of Operational Solutions of the foundation, Héctor Gallardo, who provided a brief sample, with real cases, of the possibilities offered by the Digital Portfolio. He spoke of the revolution that is living knowledge where technology has to give the solution to know how to make the best decision for the patient.

He added that the Digital Platform is a living platform that is being updated every day and that serves to consult the moment and be able to make a decision, but immediately, "that's what makes the difference". "Information can be consulted in front of the patient, the patient is no longer angry by the delay"

The importance of the new Digital Platform

The software also operates as a Network of University Physicians to keep graduates connected to the Faculty.

Most useful is that you have access to services and providers, which offer packages of everything that is needed according to COFEPRIS rules to be able to put an office; give recommendations on how to start a business and recommend platforms to earn credits.

Components within the interactive platform, which can be downloaded from the Android PlayStore, include:

  • Digital medical practice: to have electronic records of patients, write down their appointments and issue prescriptions.
  • Evidence-based medicine.
  • Guides to clinical practices of the health system in Mexico
  • Updates and scientific novelties of prestigious national and international institutions.
  • Health calculators: it throws body mass index, physical activity, caloric expenditure, cardiovascular risk, kidney function, etc.
  • Information on medicines, dosages, presentations, route of administration, therapeutic indications, secondary and adverse reactions.
  • Network of professionals.
  • Health news.
  • Sites of interest.
  • Lifeline: manual of preventive actions by age group and gender and detailed and specialized vaccination scheme.

From the collaborative work between the Faculty of Medicine and the Carlos Slim Foundation, it was decided that both would take charge of the maintenance and updates of the platform.

The design and redesign of its interface is one of the important points to highlight, as it makes the interaction more intuitive and organic. It is also worth highlighting an updated and improved database, diplomas or courses, and exclusive audiovisual material.

The advantage of this application is that it has an offline version without the need for an internet connection and you can send all the results directly to the patients.
