PAHO launched chat based on Artificial Intelligence to help prevent excessive alcohol consumption

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) launched Pahola, an Artificial Intelligence tool, which through a virtual chat provides information and specialized resources on health and alcohol.

Pahola is PAHO's new digital specialist specializing in health and alcohol consumption. It is programmed to answer questions about alcohol abuse or general questions about its consumption, in addition, all its answers are based on recent scientific information.

“Alcohol is the leading risk factor for premature mortality and disability among people between the ages of 15 and 49, so any and all tools that can help people reduce their risk and lead healthier lives they are welcome,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO). Likewise, the director of the WHO highlighted the role of new technologies, including AI, to expand access to information.

According to PAHO, each year around 379,000 people die in the Americas from complications of diseases related to alcohol consumption. This is a serious public health problem, hence the importance of generating tools that help the population to prevent or seek help to reduce alcohol consumption.

Pahola is an interactive, safe and confidential tool that provides information on the risks of alcohol consumption. In addition, it evaluates the risks related to excessive alcohol consumption through a series of questions.

Pahola can answer questions about alcohol consumption, for example, “How do I know if I drink too much? “, “Can you drink alcohol after the COVID-19 vaccine?” or “Does alcohol cause cancer?” Or it can answer your questions about healthy ways to cut down on alcohol or help a family member or friend to do so.

“PAHO's goal with Pahola is to help people better understand the harm caused by alcohol consumption, increase access to reliable information, facilitate self-assessment of alcohol-related risks, and take concrete steps to reduce alcohol consumption. of alcohol,” explained Jarbas Barbosa, deputy director of PAHO.
