Mexicans develop mobile app for the detection of melanomas through Artificial Intelligence

A group of Mexican university students and professionals are working on the development of DermaCam, a mobile application that aims to detect melanomas and prevent skin diseases.

DermaCam seeks to create an Artificial Intelligence algorithm, trained to detect skin diseases, through skin color and other characteristics. In addition, through a questionnaire that would identify the risk of suffering from a skin disease. If it detects any anomaly, the app is capable of connecting the user with a professional through a teleconsultation.

The team responsible for the creation and development of DermaCam is made up of: María Isabel Neyoy, Business Management student at CETYS University; Guillermo Ignacio Guangorena Zarzosa, general practitioner, and doctoral candidate in technology science innovation; María Fernanda Nochebuena Salazar, graduate in business creation and development, Edson Olaya, nutritionist; and Eiren Durán, medical student, at the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico.

"It is a mobile application that, through artificial vision and the phone's camera, allows us to identify visible skin diseases," explained Peralta Durán. The members of the team that participated in the TrepCamp Global Demo Day contest, an entrepreneurship simulator for the generation of innovations, explained that they chose the problem of melanomas as it is a disease that has increased suddenly in recent years in Latin America.

"In Mexico a person dies from skin cancer every two days and its early detection has a survival of 95 to 99% at 5 years", they explain about the seriousness of the disease and the importance of early detection. "We want to reduce the number of deaths from skin cancer and develop a technology for the democratization of the health of Mexicans/Latin Americans" they explain in their project.
