Latin America promotes digital health implementation

Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Peru, exchanged experiences and points of view about public health services’ future supported by ICTs, during the “XIV Jornadas de Informatica en Salud”.

The event held in Buenos Aires, was attended by officials from Argentina, Chile, Peru and Uruguay, who shared their progress in Digital Health, and also recognized the existent obstacles in the implementation of this kind of services.

National director of Health Information Systems of the Ministry of Health of Argentina, Alejandro López Osornio, detailed the process for the National Digital Health Strategy, which includes the National Digital Health Network project, accomplished in early 2019.

The National Digital Health Network, allows patients to access their Electronic Health Record (EHR), at health centers across the country. Lopez Osornio, hopes that by 2020 the current number of EHR which is 2 million people, will be doubled.

On the other hand, Uruguay, leading country in digital government, had as a representative physician Félix González member of the Electronic Government Agency and Knowledge Society (known in spanish as AGESIC), who recognized that tools such as EHR, are instruments that backups the health system.

González explained the EHR application results, which has mor than 36 million registered clinical files, used by more than 7,000 health professionals in 103 health centers.

However, Daniel Rizzato Lede, director of Health Computer Systems Development of Argentina, endorsed Perú for creating a legal framework to benefit the digital transformation in health services.  

Claudia Córdova Yamauchi, director of the General Directorate of the Ministry of Health of Peru, explained that the support from the presidency to promote a digital governance committee, additional, the director also detailed that there are 767 health centers in Peru that use EHR.

In addition, Alejandra Lozano, planning and management advisor at the Ministry of Health in Chile, spoke about the Digital Hospital and the challenges and achievements it has brought to remote communities.

Digital Health agendas, continue their path in South America reaping positive results and seeking public health system improvements.
