Japan donates to Uruguay to promote telemedicine in rural areas

Uruguay's State Health Services Administration (ASSE) received a donation from the Embassy of Japan that will strengthen telemedicine services in four localities.

Four medical centers in the Departments of Tacuarembó, Rocha, Durazno and Salto received a donation from the Embassy of Japan for the implementation of telemedicine services.

The medical centers of Castillos in Rocha, San Gregorio de Polanco in Tacuarembó, Sarandí del Yi in Durazno and Villa Constitución in Salto, will have the implementation of telemedicine services thanks to a donation from Japan to ASSE and the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), which will benefit about 24,000 people.

The donation includes an ultrasound scanner and X-ray equipment. Leonardo Cipriani, president of ASSE, explained that the equipment used will be important for the development of telemedicine in Uruguay; however, he said that it will require a series of reforms and changes in the Auxiliary Centers where it will be implemented.

Given the lack of medical specialists and X-ray technicians in the communities of these departments, telemedicine will be an important support to provide quality services to the population.

In addition, the Japanese embassy provided non-reimbursable funds to be administered by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). Ambassador Shindo Tatsuhiro explained that this project will make it possible to “reduce the gaps and broaden the horizon of action and participation of anonymous people, mainly those who are most disadvantaged”.
