China announced the release of the international travel health certificate, that will show travelers' vaccination history and results of PCR and antibody tests through an app
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China announced the launch of the digital certificate for international travel. This “passport” runs using a QR code embedded within the WeChat messaging and social networking application. The intention of this technology is to facilitate international travel during the pandemic by including information such as PCR and antibody test results, as well as users' vaccination history.
The certificate will be encrypted with a QR code to ensure security, and can be viewed by authorities upon request after scanning the code. In addition, it will also include a physical version that can be printed and has the same validity.
Besides China, other countries and regions have implemented this type of technology, such as Bahrain, Germany or the European Union, which a few weeks ago, the President of the European Commission announced that she will present a proposal for a digital passport.
Despite not being a mandatory document, the option presented by China seeks to facilitate international travel. “The pandemic is still with us, but the world economy needs a fresh start, and people-to-people encounters must resume without further delay,” explained ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian. The Asian country's authorities explained that they are looking for other countries to reach agreements to determine the validity of the document and make international travel easier and more orderly, but above all with fewer restrictions.
