Hospital in Yucatan attends pediatric patients through remote consultations

The Shriners Hospital for Children is located in Mexico City and its specialists see 20 patients a day in Yucatan through telemedicine and interconsultation.

The Shriners Hospital for Children Mexico has incorporated remote health services to provide medical care to children and adolescents requiring orthopedic treatment or treatment for burns. The hospital serves 20 children and adolescents a day from Yucatan.

The hospital, based in Mexico City, selected its headquarters in the city of Merida to provide telemedicine care to the Yucatan peninsula, and so far, patients from different states in the southeast of Mexico, such as Campeche, Quintana Roo, Tabasco and Chiapas, have been attended.

Dr. Roberto Corral Casanova, pediatric specialist at the hospital, explained that the objective of the telemedicine programs is to provide more people with the pediatric care they need. He also explained that in this way it is possible to provide first-level care, especially to patients living in vulnerable conditions.

"What we do with this program is to bring all the service that the Mexico City hospital has to the Southeast: the first assessment and follow-up consultations, in which we see if the patient is a candidate for surgery, and the best treatment is offered," explained Corral Casanova.

Patients are connected through telemedicine, using specialized equipment, so that they can get closer to the wounds so that the professionals can provide a more accurate assessment.

Shriners Hospitals for Children is part of a network of 22 hospitals and medical centers located in the Americas. It is a non-profit organization that specializes in the treatment of children with orthopedic conditions, burns or injuries.
