Costa Rica makes available its Digital Health Record (EDUS)

Through an agreement between the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) and the Superintendence of Telecommunications (Sutel), patients from remote areas will be able to obtain their Unique Digital Health Record (EDUS).

Sutel will provide the connectivity services to the Periodic Visit Centers, administered by the CCSS. Roberto Cervantes Barrantes, general manager emphasized that this agreement will ease the conditions for the EDUS Project to be strengthen throughout the country.

Cervantes explained that the Project is set to begin in 196 Periodic Visit Centers, in Brunca and Atlantica regions. In this first stage 108,000 inhabitant of this regions will be benefited.

The connection in these places will allow EDUS to work for the people in remote areas and in this way raise the health services quality. Health professionals will be able to access medication history and all historical record information to provide complete and accurate care to patients, explained the manager.

On the other hand, Gilbert Camacho Mora, president of SUTEL council, said that they’re on an opportunity to close the digital divide in remote communities and achieve greater quality in health services.

Information Technologies director Robert Picado Mora, explained that the implementation of connectivity projects means a first step to create new infrastructure to provide more telemedicine services.

Finally, it was showed that the agreement includes also the installation of free internet access points, to promote the use of technologies in the regions mentioned above.
