The Citibanamex Center will be temporarily enabled as a medical unit to treat COVID-19 patients.
The COVID-19 Temporary Unit will start on Monday to offer its services and will have 234 beds and an intermediate therapy module with eight beds in the first stage. The final project will hold 854 beds and 36 intermediate therapy beds.
The head of government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, led in an event that also had the presence of Alejandro Soberón Kuri, president of the Inter-American Entertainment Corporation (CIE) representing the 16 foundations that made donations for the realization of the project.
It is a collaborative work between the private, academic initiative and the government of Mexico City to unite resources to address the current situation facing Mexico in the COVID-19 pandemic.
The hospital will be operated by the Secretariat of Health of Mexico City and arrives at a critical time, after Mexico being decreed Phase 3 by COVID-19 this week and according to information from the Federal Health Secretariat, between 8 and 10 May is estimated the highest number of positive cases in the country.
Furthermore, the president of the CIE, stated that the scientific prestige of UNAM is reflected in the enablement of this temporary unit, specifically the technical, medical and hospital decisions that resulted in the development of the project.
Additionally, the head of government recognized the foundations and companies involved in this project: "This effort that these companies and foundations are making today is critical. On behalf of all the inhabitants of Mexico City, we thank them."
The unit was prepared in less than a month and cost 700 million MXN. In addition, it includes a pharmacy, rest areas and dining area for the health personnel.
