Medical information systems as key for Digital Health.

PAHO implemented a strategy that reinforces the management and exchange of clinical data for an integration that offers better quality in public health services.

The medical information within the public health services is a resource that is used with the aim of improving the quality of care and having knowledge of the data that provides support to perform any treatment depending on the situation.

That is why, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) together with the Ministries of Health of Latin America, developed the  Action Plan for the strengthening of health information systems 2019-2023which focuses on the digital information systems known as  IS4H

This system is a guide that marks the suggested route so that each institution can implement data-based strategies and thus be able to operate, interact and benefit from all the data that is recorded in order to assemble digital clinical records.

Since each medical history is digital, patients and doctors can have it available anywhere and in real time to analyze and choose the best procedure to solve diseases and conflicts.

Innovation is found in the way of collecting such data in indicators that mark income, gender, age, race, ethnicity, disability, geographic context and other relevant factors of users in order to better organize each element.

Also, having a solid and unified database ensures equal access to reduce the access gap and anyone can be part of public health services.

One of the advantages of integrating all information systems is the openness to public policies that support the exercise of data collection and exchange based on interoperability that allows all health centers and public institutions to have access to the same information in any moment.

In the near future, it is planned to include the new Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to occupy Big Data and Artificial Intelligence by virtue of protecting the individual information of each patient to generate an environment of trust and security.
