Researchers develop open source computer program for visualizing brain electrical activity

This research was published in the journal JoVe, which details the process for creating a multilayer spectrogram for EEG analysis.

Researchers from the University of Tennessee published the study entitled: Computer-based Multitaper Spectrogram Program for Electroencephalographic Data, detailing the development and creation of this free, open-source program for creating representations of electrical brain activity in laboratory animals. This can be used in research that studies opioid use disorder.

This can be used to create visual and quantitative representations of the electrical activity of the brain; thus, the program was validated after an analysis of encephalogram spectrograms (EEG), of mice that received different doses of opioids.

"There is a misconception that opioids promote sleep, but in quantitative studies of states of sleep and wakefulness using electroencephalographic recordings of brain waves, opiates are shown to disrupt sleep" said Ralph Lydic, a member of the research team.

By releasing this tool, the researchers promote the creation of new scientific knowledge that studies disorders that can be measured through EEG analysis in laboratory animals.
