Computational techniques used in the pharmaceutical industry and in research centers require a large economic and time investment. \"Computing tools help analyze data, process information, and build models to make it faster,\" explains Dr. Medina Franco.<\/p><p>Drug design starts from information analysis and data mining, creating predictive models. El Dr. Jos\u00e9 Luis Medina Franco y su grupo de investigaci\u00f3n Dise\u00f1o de F\u00e1rmacos Asistido por Computadora de la Facultad de Qu\u00edmica de la UNAM, han comenzado una investigaci\u00f3n sobre el potencial de nuevos f\u00e1rmacos. Los investigadores han generado modelos te\u00f3ricos computacionales e hip\u00f3tesis sobre futuros medicamentos contra enfermedades como el c\u00e1ncer. Gracias a la tecnolog\u00eda computacional, el tiempo de este tipo de investigaci\u00f3n puede reducirse entre cinco y diez a\u00f1os. Las t\u00e9cnicas computacionales utilizadas en la industria farmac\u00e9utica y en centros de investigaci\u00f3n requiere de una gran inversi\u00f3n econ\u00f3mica y de tiempo. \u201cLas herramientas de c\u00f3mputo ayudan a analizar datos, procesar informaci\u00f3n y generar modelos para que sea m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido\u201d, explica el Dr. Medina Franco. El dise\u00f1o de f\u00e1rmacos comienza desde el an\u00e1lisis de la informaci\u00f3n y la miner\u00eda de datos, y de esta forma crear modelos predictivos. Y posteriormente realizar pruebas biol\u00f3gicas. \u201cSe predice cu\u00e1les pueden tener actividad biol\u00f3gica y los compuestos seleccionados (dos, cinco, 10) se mandan al grupo que hace la evaluaci\u00f3n biol\u00f3gica\u201d. De esta forma en lugar de utilizar m\u00e9todos tradicionales donde se requer\u00eda probar de forma aleatoria cu\u00e1l compuesto tuvo impacto en un compuesto biol\u00f3gico, a trav\u00e9s de los m\u00e9todos de c\u00f3mputo se determina qu\u00e9 mol\u00e9culas pueden tener actividad biol\u00f3gica en determinados par\u00e1sitos o bacterias. \u201cLas herramientas computacionales sirven para organizar la informaci\u00f3n en bases de datos, hacer un mapeo, caracterizar y describir qu\u00edmicamente los compuestos, as\u00ed como modelos de predicci\u00f3n sobre su potencial actividad biol\u00f3gica\u201d, mencion\u00f3 Medina Franco sobre sus modelos, que han sido utilizados en conjunto con el Instituto Nacional de Cancerolog\u00eda de la UNAM para medir los usos cl\u00ednicos de medicamentos contra el c\u00e1ncer. Adicionalmente se encuentran preparando una base de datos sobre productos naturales mexicanos llamada BioFACQUIM que contiene datos sobre plantas, fungi y prop\u00f3leos end\u00e9micos.
