Gracias a la colaboraci\u00f3n entre el grupo Biomedical Imaging Technologies (BIT) de la Universidad Polit\u00e9cnica de Madrid (UPM), con el Parque Salud Mar de Barcelona, se ha logrado desarrollar un algoritmo capaz de detectar la enfermedad en los pacientes. El algoritmo est\u00e1 basado en el uso de Inteligencia Artificial y est\u00e1 programado para poder hacer la detecci\u00f3n de glaucomas a partir de retinograf\u00edas de manera inmediata. La detecci\u00f3n temprana del glaucoma puede prevenir futuras complicaciones, como la p\u00e9rdida de visi\u00f3n. Mar\u00eda Jes\u00fas Ledesma, investigadora de la UPM, se\u00f1ala que &#8220;hasta ahora, en el caso del glaucoma, los algoritmos de aprendizaje autom\u00e1tico que se han utilizado se basaban en la identificaci\u00f3n de par\u00e1metros y ratios de medidas del disco \u00f3ptico que permitieran entrenar al m\u00e9todo antes de ser aplicado&#8221;. Por otra parte, la investigadora, experta en imagen biom\u00e9dica, detall\u00f3 que este tipo de procesos costosos y largos, han sido sustituidos por nuevas t\u00e9cnicas basadas en algoritmos que permiten aprendizaje autom\u00e1tico en los programas y aumentan la precisi\u00f3n de los mismos. De esta manera investigadores del BIT, han propuesto este enfoque para realizar clasificaciones autom\u00e1ticas de glaucoma a trav\u00e9s de im\u00e1genes de ex\u00e1menes de fondo de ojo. En la fase inicial del proyecto fue implementada una herramienta de telemedicina por parte del grupo de la UPM la cual permiti\u00f3 que 15 profesionales introdujeran y evaluaran los datos de las pruebas oftalmol\u00f3gicas de m\u00e1s de mil pacientes que participaron en una campa\u00f1a de prevenci\u00f3n y detecci\u00f3n de glaucoma. En la segunda etapa, se realizaron comparaciones de los algoritmos para seleccionar el m\u00e1s adecuado para la clasificaci\u00f3n autom\u00e1tica de glaucoma y posteriormente el grupo de investigaci\u00f3n, Diagnostic Image Analysis Group, determin\u00f3 que el uso de la tecnolog\u00eda permite detectar correctamente el glaucoma al lograr ratios de sensibilidad y especificidad en un 90% de los casos. Finalmente, en una l\u00ednea de trabajo adicional, investigadores de la UPM, probaron un estudio de la aportaci\u00f3n que tiene en la clasificaci\u00f3n final la incorporaci\u00f3n de datos cl\u00ednicos adicionales de los pacientes. De esta forma al combinar los datos cl\u00ednicos y las im\u00e1genes de fondo de ojo, puede ocurrir una mejora en la sensibilidad y especificidad de la clasificaci\u00f3n.
