Researchers at Cayetano Heredia University (UPCH) developed a mobile app that seeks to facilitate the diagnosis of anemia in children, a disease that affects more than 40% of children up to 35 months in Peru.<\/p>

Mirko Zimic, head of the Bioinformatics, Molecular Biology and Technological Developments laboratory at UPCH and his team, sought to perfect traditional screening techniques of lowering the eyelid and observing the conjunctiva using a flashlight.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In this way, to avoid or reduce difficulties when performing traditional methods such as blood tests, they developed this application that simplifies the process to \"capture the digital photograph of the conjunctiva of the eye with a cell phone, which also records the child's age and gender, and takes geographic coordinates using GPS,\" Zimic explained.<\/p>

However, to use the app you need prior technical training to take the photos at the right angle and distance to get the resolution you need. In addition, there are exclusion criteria such as eye or respiratory infections, fever and congestion that cause the conjunctiva to redden.<\/p>

For initial development, cyanmethemoglobin tests were taken from 540 children to contrast those with the images taken in the app. Sensitivity of 90% was recorded when severe and moderate cases were detected and 70% for mild cases. Zimic acknowledged that a broader database is required so they are in collection process and they hope to complete that in April. This seeks to improve the algorithm's detection level.<\/p>

In addition, the Specialist in Disease Control and Prevention at Johns Hopkins University, recognized that current methods are not reaching the entire population and the application can be implemented massively and free of charge. Se trata de un procedimiento no invasivo mediante una fotograf\u00eda de la conjuntiva del ojo de paciente. Los investigadores de la Universidad Cayetano Heredia (UPCH), desarrollaron una aplicaci\u00f3n m\u00f3vil que busca facilitar el diagn\u00f3stico de anemia en ni\u00f1os, enfermedad que afecta a mas del 40% de ni\u00f1os de hasta 35 meses en Per\u00fa. De esta forma, para evitar o reducir las dificultades que surgen al realizar los m\u00e9todos tradicionales como pruebas de sangre, desarrollaron esta aplicaci\u00f3n que simplifica el proceso a \u201ccapturar la fotograf\u00eda digital de la conjuntiva del ojo con un celular, que tambi\u00e9n registra la edad y el sexo del ni\u00f1o, y toma las coordenadas geogr\u00e1ficas mediante el GPS\u201d, seg\u00fan explic\u00f3 Zimic. Sin embargo, para utilizar la app es necesaria una capacitaci\u00f3n t\u00e9cnica previa para tomar las fotograf\u00edas en el \u00e1ngulo correcto ya la distancia adecuada para obtener la resoluci\u00f3n necesitada. Para el desarrollo inicial se tomaron pruebas de cianometahemoglobina de 540 ni\u00f1os para contrastarlas con las im\u00e1genes tomadas en la app. Se registr\u00f3 una sensibilidad del 90% al detectar casos severos y moderados y del 70% para casos leves. Zimic reconoci\u00f3 que se requiere una base de datos m\u00e1s amplia por lo que se encuentran en proceso de recolecci\u00f3n que esperan concluir en el mes de abril. De esta forma se busca que el algoritmo mejore su nivel de detecci\u00f3n.
