Expert doctors funded by the government of Scotland and the United Kingdom are using state-of-the-art technology to remotely monitor patients with a chronic and possibly fatal condition. The search for a solution to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a matter of urgency, as it affects 1.2 million people in the United Kingdom alone.<\/p>

In 2018, the board of directors of the Glasgow Public Health System approved a five-year digital strategy, which includes treatments backed with Artificial Intelligence to treat COPD. In this first test, patients are provided with a portable mask that collects vital data and subsequently sends it remotely to the doctors in charge of the specific cases.<\/p>

The ability to collect data at home, instead of having to attend hospital appointments, means less travel for the patient, and also a lower risk of worsening or contagion. At the same time, it reduces the number of appointments canceled in the hospital and frees up the doctor's time.<\/p>

The commitment to Digital Health by the British government is helping to speed up hospital processes, but also to improve the health of patients. The use of mobile devices that monitor the state of health at home promises a path of medical care that relies much more on prevention than on the care of complications or acute events.<\/p>

As soon as the technology is proven, it will be very easy to start implementing it in other parts of the world with the knowledge and learning acquired in this first stage, another of the great benefits that Digital Health provides.\u00a0<\/p>

COPD is a prevalent reality and it is estimated that 64 million people suffer from this condition in the world and by 2030 it will be the fourth leading cause of death; In Latin America, according to the PLATINO study (Latin American Pulmonary Obstruction Research Project) the prevalence of COPD in various cities of the region was evaluated, finding a rate of 19.7% for Montevideo, Uruguay, 16.9% for Santiago, Chile, 15.8% for S\u00e3o Paulo, Brazil, 12.1% for Caracas, Venezuela and 7.8% for Mexico City.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Los m\u00e9dicos del pa\u00eds brit\u00e1nico utilizan nuevas tecnolog\u00edas para ayudar a los pacientes con enfermedades pulmonares graves a recibir tratamiento desde sus hogares. M\u00e9dicos expertos financiados por el gobierno de Escocia y de Reino Unido est\u00e1n usando tecnolog\u00eda de punta para monitorear remotamente a pacientes con una condici\u00f3n cr\u00f3nica y posiblemente mortal. La b\u00fasqueda de una soluci\u00f3n para tratar la enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva cr\u00f3nica (EPOC) es un tema de urgencia, pues s\u00f3lo en Reino Unido afecta a 1.2 millones de personas. En 2018, la junta directiva del Sistema de Salud P\u00fablico de Glasgow aprob\u00f3 una estrategia digital a cinco a\u00f1os, que incluye tratamientos respaldados con Inteligencia Artificial para tratar el EPOC. En esta primera prueba, se proporciona a los pacientes una m\u00e1scara port\u00e1til que recopila datos vitales y posteriormente los env\u00eda v\u00eda remota a los m\u00e9dicos encargados de los casos espec\u00edficos. Para lograr esta prueba y las consecuentes, el servicio de salud escoc\u00e9s se ha basado en la tecnolog\u00eda de nube Azure, desarrollada por Microsoft. El uso de dispositivos m\u00f3viles que monitoreen el estado de salud en el hogar promete una v\u00eda de atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica que se base mucho m\u00e1s en la prevenci\u00f3n que en la atenci\u00f3n de complicaciones o eventos agudos. En cuanto la tecnolog\u00eda est\u00e9 probada, ser\u00e1 muy sencillo poder comenzar a implementarla en otras partes del mundo con los conocimientos y aprendizajes adquiridos en esta primera etapa, otro de los grandes beneficios que provee la Salud Digital.  La EPOC es una realidad prevalente y se estima que 64 millones de personas sufren de esta condici\u00f3n en el mundo y para el 2030 ser\u00e1 la cuarta causa de muerte; en Am\u00e9rica Latina, seg\u00fan el estudio PLATINO (Proyecto Latinoamericano de Investigaci\u00f3n en Obstrucci\u00f3n Pulmonar) se evalu\u00f3 la prevalencia de EPOC en diversas ciudades de la regi\u00f3n, encontrando una tasa de 19.7% para Montevideo, Uruguay, 16.9% para Santiago, Chile, 15.8% para San Pablo, Brasil, 12.1% para Caracas, Venezuela y 7.8% para Ciudad de M\u00e9xico.
