The fAIr LAC Jalisco initiative presented the results of the pilot project for the prevention of diabetic retina through Artificial Intelligence (AI).<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The fAIr LAC Jalisco project is an initiative made up of the Inter-American Development Bank, the Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey in Guadalajara (ITESM), the Government of Jalisco and C Minds. The objective of the project is to use the benefits of AI, in conjunction with academia, society, civil, public and private sectors, to generate benefits for the population of Jalisco. Since 2020 this project began to be developed<\/a> promoted by the IDB and initially it was specified that it would be a three-year project.<\/p>

The results of the pilot project for the prevention and diagnosis of diabetic retina were presented at the end of August 2022 after its implementation in three health centers of the Decentralized Public Organization (OPD) of Jalisco Health Services. Likewise, the project had the collaboration of Tec Salud of ITESM, the Silo\u00e9 Institute, Civil Hospital of Guadalajara and the College of Ophthalmologists of Jalisco.<\/p>

The pilot test followed the following steps: firstly, health personnel captured fundus photographs of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus; second, the photos were analyzed by an AI program hosted in the cloud; thirdly, the medical staff analyzed the results: and finally, the patients were notified of the result, and only in specific and necessary cases were they referred to specialists in ophthalmology at the Civil Hospital.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

This initiative uses an AI-based retinal test for telemedicine-assisted diabetic retinopathy detection. Its implementation was carried out over a period of eight months, from August 2021 to March 2022, and included the participation of 1,053 patients with diabetes mellitus who were evaluated free of charge.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Thanks to this, it was possible to make 100 diagnoses of this condition and allowed patients to be referred to specialists in ophthalmology. fAIr LAC Jalisco was the first initiative of its kind in Mexico and was also successfully tested by classifying images of saints and patients with diabetic retinopathy with an accuracy of 96%.<\/p>

The program was implemented within the Cardiometabolic Diseases Program of the OPD in a model called "Systematic Screening of Diabetic Retinopathy assisted with Telemedicine and Artificial Intelligence".<\/p>

The three health centers that incorporated this strategy were La Aurora and Esperanza and Yugoslavia in Guadalajara and Para\u00edsos de Colli in Zapopan. "The results of the study will serve to make decisions in favor of patients with retinopathy caused by diabetes, another of the epidemics that we suffer in the world," explained Fernando Petersen Aranguren, head of the SSJ.<\/p>

Likewise, Luis Tijerina, from the IDB and a specialist in Digital Health, explained that these types of projects are necessary and worth replicating to improve the health of the population and promote evidence-based decision-making.<\/p>

Similarly, Enrique Cort\u00e9s, director of Artificial Intelligence at ITESM, explained the usefulness of fAIr Jalisco "It is a field pilot with real and not theoretical results", and explained that the next step is to see the scale of the pilot and that collaboration between various sectors with health authorities will be necessary. La iniciativa fAIr LAC Jalisco present\u00f3 los resultados del proyecto piloto de prevenci\u00f3n de retina diab\u00e9tica por medio de Inteligencia Artificial (IA). El proyecto fAIr LAC Jalisco es una iniciativa compuesta por el Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo, el Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey en Guadalajara (ITESM), el Gobierno de Jalisco y C Minds. El objetivo del proyecto es utilizar los beneficios de la IA, en conjunto con la academia, sociedad, civil, sector p\u00fablico y privado, para generar beneficios a la poblaci\u00f3n de Jalisco. Desde 2020 se comenz\u00f3 a desarrollar este proyecto impulsado por el BID e inicialmente se especifico que ser\u00eda un proyecto de tres a\u00f1os. Los resultados del proyecto piloto de prevenci\u00f3n y diagn\u00f3stico de retina diab\u00e9tica fueron presentados a finales de agosto de 2022 luego de su implementaci\u00f3n en tres centros de salud del Organismo P\u00fablico Descentralizado (OPD) de Servicios de Salud Jalisco.  Asimismo, el poryecto cont\u00f3 con la colaboraci\u00f3n de Tec Salud del ITESM, el Instituto Silo\u00e9, Hospital Civil de Guadalajara y el Colegio de M\u00e9dicos Oftalm\u00f3logos de Jalisco. La prueba piloto sigui\u00f3 los siguientes pasos, en primer lugar, el personal de salud captur\u00f3 fotograf\u00edas de fondo de ojo en pacientes con diabetes mellitus tipo 2; en segunda instancia, las fotograf\u00edas fueron analizadas por un programa de IA alojado en la nube; en tercer lugar, el personal m\u00e9dico analiz\u00f3 los resultados: y finalmente se les notific\u00f3 el resultado a los pacientes, y solo en casos espec\u00edficos y necesarios se les refiri\u00f3 con especialistas en oftalmolog\u00eda del Hospital Civil. Esta iniciativa utiliza una prueba de retina basada en IA para la detecci\u00f3n de retinopat\u00eda diab\u00e9tica asistida por telemedicina. Su implementaci\u00f3n se realiz\u00f3 un periodo de ocho meses, de agosto de 2021 a marzo de 2022 y cont\u00f3 con la participaci\u00f3n de 1,053 pacientes con diabetes mellitus que fueron evaluados gratuitamente. Gracias a esto fue posible realizar 100 diagn\u00f3sticos de esta afecci\u00f3n y permiti\u00f3 que los pacientes fueran referidos con especialistas en oftalmolog\u00eda. fAIr LAC Jalisco fue la primera iniciativa de su tipo en M\u00e9xico y adem\u00e1s fue probada con \u00e9xito al lograr clasificar im\u00e1genes de pacientes santos y con retinopat\u00eda diab\u00e9tica con una precisi\u00f3n de 96%. El programa fue implementado dentro del Programa de Enfermedades Cardiometab\u00f3licas del OPD en un modelo denominado \u201cTamizaje Sistem\u00e1tico de Retinopat\u00eda Diab\u00e9tica asistido con Telemedicina e Inteligencia Artificial\u201d. Los tres centros de salud que incorporaron esta estrategia fueron La Aurora y Esperanza y Yugoslavia en Guadalajara y Para\u00edsos de Colli en Zapopan. \u201cLos resultados del estudio servir\u00e1n para tomar decisiones a favor de los pacientes que cursan con retinopat\u00eda causada por diabetes, otra de las epidemias que padecemos en el mundo\u201d, explic\u00f3 Fernando Petersen Aranguren, titular de la SSJ. Asimismo, Luis Tijerina, del BID y especialista en Salud Digital, explic\u00f3 que este tipo de proyectos son necesarios y vale la pena replicarlos para mejorar la salud de la poblaci\u00f3n y promover la toma de decisiones basadas en evidencia. De igual forma, Enrique Cort\u00e9s, director de Inteligencia Artificial del ITESM, explic\u00f3 la utilidad de fAIr Jalisco \u201cSe trata de un piloto en campo con resultados reales y no te\u00f3ricos\u201d, y explic\u00f3 que el siguiente paso es ver la escala que tiene el piloto y que ser\u00e1 necesaria la colaboraci\u00f3n entre diversos sectores con las autoridades de salud.  De esta forma, en un futuro se espera que esta iniciativa sea replicada en m\u00e1s centros de salud en el estado y beneficiar a m\u00e1s personas.
