Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), is a database that serves as a source of information for the Virtual Health Library (VHL) of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

LILACS, one of the most important health databases in the American continent, recently reached the mark of one million bibliographic records. Reaching this mark in the LILACS database has been possible thanks to the collaborative work and effort of thousands of researchers and medical professionals for more than 35 years in 21 countries in the Latin American and Caribbean region.<\/p>

LILACS is managed through automated technological processes and local leaders who are in charge of managing it in their countries. The research and documents that can be found in this database have been carried out by more than 800 health institutions, universities, research centers, editorial teams, and more than 800 scientific journals.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The database, in addition to highlighting the importance of medical and scientific research, also shows its reflection on public policies in the region. In total, LILACS has more than 833,000 journal articles, 100,000 books, 54,000 theses, and 13,000 government documents.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Currently, such a large database can be used as the main reference source for systematic reviews, clinical practice guidelines, clinical trials, among other types of studies that require large amounts of technical and scientific information. In addition, LILACS promotes scientific production in the region as it offers visibility to documents that are not indexed in international databases.<\/p>

Likewise, the interculturality of the region is reflected in the scientific production that LILACS has, since there are more than 410 thousand documents in both Portuguese and Spanish and 190 thousand in English, among other languages such as French, Italian and German. And it is worth mentioning that the LILAC methodology generates more than 90 databases for various VHLs throughout the region.<\/p>

Literatura Latinoamericana y del Caribe en Ciencias de la Salud (LILACS), es una base de datos que sirve como fuente de informaci\u00f3n de la Biblioteca Virtual en Salud (BVS) de la Organizaci\u00f3n Panamericana de la Salud (OPS). Recientemente LILACS, una de las bases de datos en salud m\u00e1s importantes del continente americano logr\u00f3 la marca de un mill\u00f3n de registros bibliogr\u00e1ficos. Alcanzar esta marca en la base de datos LILACS ha sido posible gracias al trabajo colaborativo y el esfuerzo de miles de investigadores y profesionales m\u00e9dicos por m\u00e1s de 35 a\u00f1os en 21 pa\u00edses de la regi\u00f3n de Am\u00e9rica Latina y el Caribe. LILACS es administrada por medio de procesos tecnol\u00f3gicos automatizados y l\u00edderes locales que se encargan de gestionarla en sus pa\u00edses. Las investigaciones y documentos que se pueden encontrar en esta base de datos han sido realizados por m\u00e1s de 800 instituciones de salud, universidades, centros de investigaci\u00f3n, equipos editoriales, y m\u00e1s de 800 revistas cient\u00edficas. La base de datos adem\u00e1s de resaltar la importancia de la investigaci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica y cient\u00edfica, tambi\u00e9n muestra su reflejo en pol\u00edticas p\u00fablicas en la regi\u00f3n. En total, LILACS cuenta con m\u00e1s de 833 mil art\u00edculos de revistas, 100 mil libros, 54 mil tesis y 13 mil documentos de gobiernos. Actualmente, una base de datos tan grande puede ser utilizada como fuente principal de consulta para realizar revisiones sistem\u00e1ticas, gu\u00edas de pr\u00e1ctica cl\u00ednica, ensayos cl\u00ednicos, entre otro tipo de estudios que requieran de grandes cantidades de informaci\u00f3n t\u00e9cnica y cient\u00edfica. Adem\u00e1s, LILACS promueve la producci\u00f3n cient\u00edfica en la regi\u00f3n ya que ofrece visibilidad a documentos que no est\u00e1n indexados en bases de datos internacionales. Asimismo, la interculturalidad de la regi\u00f3n se ve reflejada en la producci\u00f3n cient\u00edfica que tiene LILACS, pues hay m\u00e1s de 410 mil documentos tanto en portugu\u00e9s como en espa\u00f1ol y 190 mil en ingl\u00e9s, entre otros idiomas como franc\u00e9s, italiano y alem\u00e1n.
