Recent research has shown how technologies powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) have made significant progress in the diagnosis of psychological disorders.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Various AI models have been successfully applied in the diagnosis of psychological disorders and mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, autism spectrum disorder, among others. These types of conditions affect more than a billion people worldwide.<\/p>

The diagnosis of mental illnesses is often complicated due to their heterogeneity in clinical presentation and similar symptoms. Likewise, the practices used for the diagnosis of these diseases are based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) and the International Classification of Diseases manual (ICD-11), these tools seem to have been surpassed, since who propose that the diagnosis be based on patient reports and observations and interpretations made by doctors.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Likewise, its diagnosis requires the use of various resources and diagnostic tools such as interviews, as well as the preparation of clinical histories, which takes more time than expected. For this reason, Digital Health and its tools offer a series of new tools and opportunities to support the diagnosis and intervention in mental illness and mental health.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

For example, AI is capable of training models that learn rules and offer conclusions about certain information. In mental health, AI has been used, for example, in social bots that support care for dementia and other disorders.<\/p>

A study published in npj Digital Medicine journal<\/em>, entitled: \u201cThe performance of artificial intelligence-driven technologies in the diagnosis of mental disorders: an overview\u201d, shows the various utilities of AI in the diagnosis of these mental conditions.<\/p>

\u201cAI has great potential to reshape our understanding of mental disorders and how to diagnose them. Harnessing AI to study and make sense of complex patterns and interactions between genes, the brain, behaviors, and experiences presents an unprecedented opportunity to improve early detection of mental illness and personalize treatment options."<\/p>

For the review, the authors searched 11 electronic databases, thus identifying 852 citations, of which 344 duplicates were removed and 466 citations were excluded. Finally, for this study, 15 systematic reviews were taken into account, after passing through various exclusion filters as irrelevant data in the participating population, in interventions or in type of publication.<\/p>

The reviews were published between 2017 and 2020. The reviews focused on the diagnosis of ten different mental illnesses: 7 in Alzheimer's, 6 in mild cognitive impairment, 3 in schizophrenia, 2 in bipolar disorder, 1 in autism spectrum disorder, 1 in obsessive-compulsive disorder, 1 in post-traumatic stress disorder and 1 in psychotic disorders.<\/p>

The performance in the reviews showed a range from 21 to 100% in the diagnosis of these mental conditions. Seven of the reviews were based on any AI approach, another seven on supervised machine learning, and one on deep learning.<\/p>

The number of studies retrieved in these reviews ranged from 52 to 7991 and included studies ranged from 12 to 114.<\/p>

Investigaciones recientes, han mostrado como las tecnolog\u00edas impulsadas por Inteligencia Artificial (IA), han logrado un avance importante en el diagn\u00f3stico de trastornos psicol\u00f3gicos. Diversos modelos de IA han sido aplicados exitosamente en el diagn\u00f3stico de trastornos psicol\u00f3gicos y enfermedades mentales como esquizofrenia, trastorno bipolar, trastorno de estr\u00e9s post traum\u00e1tico, trastorno del espectro autista, entre otros. Este tipo de condiciones afectan a m\u00e1s de mil millones de personas en todo el mundo. El diagn\u00f3stico de enfermedades mentales suele ser complicado debido a su heterogeneidad en la presentaci\u00f3n cl\u00ednica y a s\u00edntomas similares. Asimismo, las pr\u00e1cticas utilizadas para el diagn\u00f3stico de estas enfermedades se basan en el Manual Diagn\u00f3stico y Estad\u00edstico de los Trastornos Mentales (DSM-5) y el manual de Clasificaci\u00f3n Internacional de Enfermedades (ICD-11), estas herramientas parecen haber sido superadas, ya que proponen que el diagn\u00f3stico se base en relatos de los pacientes y observaciones e interpretaciones realizadas por m\u00e9dicos. Asimismo, su diagn\u00f3stico requiere utilizar diversos recursos y herramientas de diagn\u00f3stico como entrevistas, as\u00ed como la elaboraci\u00f3n de historias cl\u00ednicas, lo que toma m\u00e1s tiempo del esperado. Por ello, la Salud Digital y sus herramientas ofrecen una serie de nuevas herramientas y oportunidades para apoyar en el diagn\u00f3stico e intervenci\u00f3n en enfermedades mentales y salud mental. Por ejemplo, la IA es capaz de entrenar modelos que aprendan reglas y ofrezcan conclusiones sobre informaci\u00f3n determinada. En salud mental la IA ha sido utilizada por ejemplo en bots sociales que apoyan la atenci\u00f3n de demencia y otros trastornos. Un estudio publicado en npj Digital Medicine, titulado: \u201cEl desempe\u00f1o de las tecnolog\u00edas impulsadas por la inteligencia artificial en el diagn\u00f3stico de los trastornos mentales: una revisi\u00f3n general\u201d, muestra las diversas utilidades de la IA en el diagn\u00f3stico de estas condiciones mentales. \u201cLa IA tiene un gran potencial para remodelar nuestra comprensi\u00f3n de los trastornos mentales y c\u00f3mo diagnosticarlos. Aprovechar la IA para estudiar y dar sentido a patrones e interacciones complejos entre los genes, el cerebro, los comportamientos y las experiencias presenta una oportunidad sin precedentes para mejorar la detecci\u00f3n temprana de enfermedades mentales y personalizar las opciones de tratamiento\u201d, explican los autores. Para la revisi\u00f3n, los autores buscaron en 11 bases de datos electr\u00f3nicas, de esta forma lograron identificar 852 citas, de las cuales se eliminaron 344 duplicados y se excluyeron 466 citas. Finalmente, para este estudio, se tomaron en cuenta 15 revisiones sistem\u00e1ticas, luego de pasar por diversos filtros de exclusi\u00f3n como datos irrelevantes en la poblaci\u00f3n participante, en intervenciones o en tipo de publicaci\u00f3n. El rendimiento en las revisiones mostr\u00f3 un rango de 21 al 100% en el diagn\u00f3stico de estas condiciones mentales. Siete de las revisiones se basaron en cualquier enfoque de IA, otras siete en el aprendizaje autom\u00e1tico supervisada y una en aprendizaje profundo.
