The Catholic University of Chile, together with an interdisciplinary team of engineers and doctors, has created the Millennium Institute in Engineering and Artificial Intelligence for Health - iHealth.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The new institute will focus on solving problems related to diagnoses through magnetic resonance imaging. The objective of the I-Health Millennium Institute is to optimize the use of the magnetic resonator through interdisciplinary work between doctors, engineers and specialists in Artificial Intelligence (AI).<\/p>

In this way, the new institute seeks to streamline diagnoses and also make the tests more accurate. \u201cThe synergy between the physics of medical imaging and AI helps us at different stages of imaging and clinical use. From the way we generate them, how we reconstruct them, and then how we can analyze them and obtain information from them\u201d, explains Claudia Prieto, professor at the Catholic University and director of the iHealth Millennium Institute.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In addition, Prieto explained that by combining AI with the physics of medical imaging, it is possible to obtain more information than through traditional techniques. In this sense, the institute's specialists will develop models for combining patient information, such as physiological sensors or risk factors, in order to anticipate diseases and achieve more precise diagnoses at a lower cost and, above all, with individual care for each patient.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\u201cTo achieve these goals, we will exploit artificial intelligence techniques, but not acting as a kind of black box, but rather in combination with the information we know about the physics of medical images and, very importantly, with the experience of doctors and professionals. of health\u201d, explained the director of the iHealth Millennium Institute.<\/p>

For his part, Marcelo And\u00eda, deputy director of the Millennium Institute iHealth, recognized the importance of the development of AI in Latin America, to generate local research at an international level. In this way, new information and new algorithms can be generated that are applied to the reality of Latin American countries.<\/p>

La Universidad Cat\u00f3lica de Chile en conjunto con un equipo interdisciplinario de ingenieros y m\u00e9dicos, ha creado el Instituto Milenio en Ingenier\u00eda e Inteligencia Artificial para la Salud – iHealth. El nuevo instituto, se enfocar\u00e1 en resolver problem\u00e1ticas relacionadas con diagn\u00f3sticos a trav\u00e9s de resonancias magn\u00e9ticas. El objetivo del Instituto Milenio I-Health, es optimizar el uso del resonador magn\u00e9tico a trav\u00e9s del trabajo interdisciplinario entre m\u00e9dicos, ingenieros y especialistas en Inteligencia Artificial (IA). De esta forma, el nuevo instituto busca agilizar los diagn\u00f3sticos y que adem\u00e1s los ex\u00e1menes sean m\u00e1s precisos. \u201cLa sinergia entre la f\u00edsica de las im\u00e1genes m\u00e9dicas y la IA nos ayuda en distintas etapas de la obtenci\u00f3n de las im\u00e1genes y su uso cl\u00ednico. Desde la forma que las generamos, c\u00f3mo las reconstruimos, y despu\u00e9s el c\u00f3mo las podemos analizar y obtener informaci\u00f3n de ellas”, explica Claudia Prieto, docente de la Universidad Cat\u00f3lica y directora del Instituto Milenio iHealth. Adem\u00e1s, Prieto explic\u00f3 que al combinar IA con la f\u00edsica de las im\u00e1genes m\u00e9dicas, es posible obtener m\u00e1s informaci\u00f3n que a trav\u00e9s de t\u00e9cnicas tradicionales. En este sentido los especialistas del instituto desarrollar\u00e1n modelos para la combinaci\u00f3n de informaci\u00f3n del paciente, como sensores fisiol\u00f3gicos o factores de riesgo y as\u00ed anticiparse a enfermedades y lograr diagn\u00f3sticos m\u00e1s precisos a menor costo y sobre todo con atenci\u00f3n individual para cada paciente. “Para lograr estos objetivos explotaremos t\u00e9cnicas de inteligencia artificial, pero no actuando como una especie de caja negra, sino que en combinaci\u00f3n con la informaci\u00f3n que conocemos de la f\u00edsica de las im\u00e1genes m\u00e9dicas y de manera muy importante con la experiencia de los m\u00e9dicos y profesionales de la salud\u201d, explic\u00f3 la directora del Instituto Milenio iHealth. Por su parte, Marcelo And\u00eda, director alterno del Instituto Milenio iHealth, reconoci\u00f3 la importancia del desarrollo de IA en Latinoam\u00e9rica, para generar investigaci\u00f3n local de nivel internacional. De esta forma se puede genera nuevas informaci\u00f3n y nuevos algoritmos que se apliquen a la realidad de los pa\u00edses latinoamericanos.
