The Virtual Health Library was created in 1998, thanks to the advance in the adoption of the Internet in the region. <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The Latin American and Caribbean Center for Health Sciences Information (BIREME), of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has a technical cooperation program, of which the Virtual Health Library (VHL) stands out, which this 2022 , is celebrating its 24th anniversary.<\/p>

The mission of the VHL is to facilitate access to information and scientific evidence for health professionals in the region of the Americas. \u201cThe VHL is an information management model based on collaborative and network work, applied to the creation, organization and dissemination of information and scientific and technical evidence in health made available to users online through the 67 portals of active instances of the VHL\u201d, they explain in the 2020 Guide for the development of the Virtual Health Library.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

After its foundation in 1998, the VHL laid its foundations during the IV Regional Congress on Health Sciences Information (CRICS4), in which the starting framework for the VHL was established through the Declaration of Costa Rica.<\/p>

The VHL network is currently made up of 67 national institutions and organizations that follow the same VHL model, which promotes collaborative work.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

One of the most recent success stories happened in Brazil, because in August 2021, the 20th anniversary of the Brazilian Ministry of Health (BVS MS) was celebrated. This initiative provides free access to the entire collection of the Ministry of Health, which includes books, health campaigns, magazines, scientific articles, multimedia materials, as well as access to institutional, national and international scientific databases.<\/p>

BIREME and the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation manage 11 VHL in Brazil, with detailed information on specific topics such as cultural heritage of health, bioethics, infectious diseases, social thought, health of indigenous peoples, education for health professionals, among others.<\/p>

In the rest of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, the work of the VHL is promoted by the Health Information Networks, which seek democratization in the access and visibility of scientific knowledge in the countries of the region. Currently the VHL has projects in Honduras, Nicaragua, Uruguay, Panama, Colombia, Peru and Argentina.<\/p>

La Biblioteca Virtual en Salud fue creada en 1998, gracias al avance en la adopci\u00f3n del internet en la regi\u00f3n. El Centro Latinoamericano y del Caribe de Informaci\u00f3n en Ciencias de la Salud (BIREME), de la Organizaci\u00f3n Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) cuentan con un programa de cooperaci\u00f3n t\u00e9cnica, del cual sobresale la Biblioteca Virtual en Salud (BVS), que este 2022, se encuentra celebrando su 24 aniversario. La misi\u00f3n de la BVS es facilitar el acceso a la informaci\u00f3n y evidencia cient\u00edfica a los profesionales de la salud de la regi\u00f3n de las Am\u00e9ricas. \u201cLa BVS es un modelo de gesti\u00f3n de informaci\u00f3n basado en el trabajo colaborativo y en red, aplicado a la creaci\u00f3n, organizaci\u00f3n y diseminaci\u00f3n de informaci\u00f3n y evidencia cient\u00edfica y t\u00e9cnica en salud puesta a disposici\u00f3n de los usuarios en l\u00ednea a trav\u00e9s de los 67 portales de instancias activas de la BVS\u201d, explican en la Gu\u00eda 2020 para el desenvolvimiento de la Biblioteca Virtual en Salud. Tras su fundaci\u00f3n en 1998, la BVS sent\u00f3 sus bases durante el IV Congreso Regional de Informaci\u00f3n en Ciencias de la Salud (CRICS4), en el cual se estableci\u00f3 el marco de inicio de la BVS a trav\u00e9s de la Declaraci\u00f3n de Costa Rica. La red de la BVS actualmente est\u00e1 conformada por 67 instituciones y organizaciones nacionales que siguen el mismo modelo BVS, el cual promueve el trabajo colaborativo. Uno de los casos de \u00e9xito m\u00e1s recientes sucedi\u00f3 en Brasil, pues en agosto de 2021, se celebr\u00f3 el 20 aniversario de la BVS Ministerio de Salud de Brasil (BVS MS). Esta iniciativa brinda acceso libre a todo el acervo del Ministerio de Salud, el cual incluye libros, campa\u00f1as de salud, revistas, art\u00edculos cient\u00edficos, materiales multimedia, as\u00ed como acceso a bases de datos cient\u00edficas institucionales, nacionales e internacionales. BIREME y la Fundaci\u00f3n Oswaldo Cruz, gestionan 11 BVS en Brasil, con informaci\u00f3n detallada en temas espec\u00edficos como patrimonio cultural de la salud, bio\u00e9tica, enfermedades infecciosas, pensamiento social, salud de los pueblos ind\u00edgenas, educaci\u00f3n para profesionales de la salud, entre otros. En el resto de pa\u00edses de Am\u00e9rica Latina y el Caribe, el trabajo de la BVS se ve impulsado por las Redes de Informaci\u00f3n en Salud, que buscan la democratizaci\u00f3n en el acceso y la visibilidad del conocimiento cient\u00edficos en los pa\u00edses de la regi\u00f3n.
