Mexican students and scientists from the Center for Research and Advanced Studies (Cinvestav) of the National Polytechnic Institute, developed a device for the rehabilitation of respiratory muscles focused on post-COVID-19 rehabilitation.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

People who suffer from complications of COVID-19, and who manage to recover, may experience muscle weakness, shortness of breath, fatigue, among other symptoms. For this reason, it is necessary to carry out rehabilitation therapies, so that patients can gradually carry out the same activities they did before suffering from COVID-19.<\/p>

In this sense, Dr. Nadia Vanessa Garc\u00eda Hern\u00e1ndez, researcher of the Conacyt Chairs program, of the Cinvestav Unidad Saltillo, in collaboration with other professionals and students, developed two devices for respiratory muscle rehabilitation therapies, a forcemeter and a muscle trainer respiratory.<\/p>

"These devices make it possible to evaluate the strength of the respiratory muscles and guide the execution of personalized exercises, through video games installed on a computer, only that, instead of using a control, the movements are performed through the trainer," he explained. So far there are two games developed to be played using the devices mentioned above. The first game consists of moving a bird up and down in order to eat fruits, and the other is about a ship that must avoid obstacles along the way.<\/p>

The forcemeter works to measure the maximum pressures of inspiration and exhalation through the mouth. So it basically works as an in-game control through exercises and inhalation and exhalation. Filters are interchangeable and mouthpieces are disposable for single patient use.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Likewise, the respiratory muscle trainer works in the same way as the muscular one, with the difference that it requires a valve to apply resistance.<\/p>

Before beginning therapy through this interactive game, several tests must be carried out. First the patient covers his nose with a nose clip and tries to inhale and exhale with his mouth through the forcemeter. Then the professional measures the pressure at which the air enters or leaves, to know the state of the patient's respiratory muscles.<\/p>

By setting the parameters and pressure levels, the patient must perform the inhalation and exhalation exercises in coordination with the video game. The game character goes up when the patient inhales and goes down when he exhales.<\/p>

After completing the game, the measurements are recorded in a database that shows the patient's progress in each session.<\/p>

Recorded data indicates that patients have been able to strengthen their respiratory muscles and have achieved improvements of up to 40% over their baseline measurements. "The importance of this project in the rehabilitation area is that systems are created that motivate and guide people to perform their exercises correctly and in a personalized way," explained the specialist.<\/p>

Estudiantes y Cient\u00edficos mexicanos del Centro de Investigaci\u00f3n y de Estudios Avanzados (Cinvestav) del Instituto Polit\u00e9cnico Nacional, desarrollaron un dispositivo para la rehabilitaci\u00f3n de m\u00fasculos respiratorios enfocado a la rehabilitaci\u00f3n post COVID-19. Las personas que sufren complicaciones de COVID-19, y que logran recuperarse, pueden llegar a sufrir debilidad muscular, dificultad para respirar, fatiga, entre otros s\u00edntomas. Por ello es necesario realizar terapias de rehabilitaci\u00f3n, para que los pacientes puedan realizar poco a poco las mismas actividades que realizaban antes de padecer COVID-19. En este sentido, la Dra. Nadia Vanessa Garc\u00eda Hern\u00e1ndez, investigadora del programa de C\u00e1tedras Conacyt, del Cinvestav Unidad Saltillo, en colaboraci\u00f3n con otros profesionales y estudiantes, desarrollaron dos dispositivos para las terapias de rehabilitaci\u00f3n de m\u00fasculos respiratorios, un forc\u00edmetro y un entrenador muscular respiratorio. \u201cEstos dispositivos permiten evaluar la fuerza de los m\u00fasculos respiratorios y guiar la ejecuci\u00f3n de los ejercicios personalizados, a trav\u00e9s de videojuegos instalados en una computadora, solo que, en lugar de emplear un control, los movimientos se realizan a trav\u00e9s del entrenador\u201d, explic\u00f3 la Dra. Garc\u00eda Hern\u00e1ndez. Hasta el momento son dos los juegos desarrollados para jugarse utilizando los dispositivos mencionados anteriormente. El primer juego consiste en mover un ave de arriba a abajo con el objetivo de comer frutas, y el otro se trata de un barco que debe evitar obst\u00e1culos en el camino. El forc\u00edmetro funciona para medir las presiones m\u00e1ximas de inspiraci\u00f3n y exhalaci\u00f3n a trav\u00e9s de la boca. Por lo que funciona b\u00e1sicamente como un control en el juego a trav\u00e9s de ejercicios e inhalaci\u00f3n y exhalaci\u00f3n. Los filtros son intercambiables y las boquillas son desechables para que solo los utilice un paciente. Asimismo, el entrenador muscular respiratorio, funciona de la misma forma que el muscular, con la diferencia que este requiere una v\u00e1lvula para aplicar resistencia. Antes de comenzar la terapia a trav\u00e9s de este juego interactivo se deben realizar varias pruebas. Primero el paciente tapa su nariz con un clip nasal e intenta inhalar y exhalar con la boca a trav\u00e9s del forc\u00edmetro. Luego el profesional mide la presi\u00f3n en la que entra o sale el aire, para conocer el estado de los m\u00fasculos respiratorios del paciente. Al establecer los par\u00e1metros y los niveles de presi\u00f3n, el paciente debe realizar los ejercicios de inhalaci\u00f3n y exhalaci\u00f3n de manera coordinada con el videojuego. El personaje del juego sube cuando el paciente inhala y baja cuando exhala. Tras completar el juego, las mediciones son registradas en una base de datos que muestra el progreso del paciente en cada sesi\u00f3n. Los datos registrados indican que los pacientes han logrado fortalecer sus m\u00fasculos respiratorios y han obtenido mejoras de hasta el 40% con respecto a sus mediciones iniciales. \u201cLa importancia de este proyecto en el \u00e1rea de rehabilitaci\u00f3n es que se crean sistemas que motiven y gu\u00eden a las personas a realizar sus ejercicios de manera correcta y personalizada\u201d, explic\u00f3 la especialista.
