The telemedicine network of the Catholic University of Chile (UC) seeks to bring medical services closer to patients who are not in the Metropolitan Region of Santiago. Their pilot program started even before the COVID-19 outbreak, so they were prepared to provide services remotely during isolation measures.<\/p>

Dr. Sebasti\u00e1n Valderrama, director of the UC Virtual Medical Center, explained in an interview with Emol that the telemedicine services offered by the Center seek to reduce patient travel, especially at times of high peaks of the pandemic and the infections of COVID-19 and its variants. "It is a tremendous benefit, not being exposed to new infections, saving time and resources in mobilization, in addition to being able to access timely medical care," he explained.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Also, despite the benefits of telemedicine, Dr. Valderrama recognizes that it is a complementary service that facilitates access to health services for patients. In this sense, the UC Network seeks to promote a hybrid care model, which includes remote and face-to-face care if required.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

This UC initiative has not only general practitioners, but also specialist doctors, and laboratories for taking samples in various parts of the country. The goal is to achieve better diagnoses and bring medical care closer to more people, especially those who live in rural areas.<\/p>

\u201cI am convinced that this is here to stay, and from the governing entities there has been tremendous support. Desde antes del comienzo de la pandemia el Centro M\u00e9dico Virtual UC CHRISTUS contaba con un programa piloto de telemedicina. La red de telemedicina de la Universidad de Cat\u00f3lica de Chile (UC) busca acercar servicios m\u00e9dicos a pacientes que no se encuentran en la Regi\u00f3n Metropolitana de Santiago. Su programa piloto inici\u00f3 incluso antes del brote de COVID-19, por lo que se encontraron preparados para brindar servicios a distancia durante las medidas de aislamiento. El Dr. Sebasti\u00e1n Valderrama director del Centro M\u00e9dico Virtual de la UC, explic\u00f3 en entrevista con Emol, que los servicios de telemedicina que ofrece el Centro buscan reducir los desplazamientos de los pacientes, especialmente en los momentos de picos altos de la pandemia y de los contagios de COVID-19 y sus variantes. “Es un tremendo beneficio, no exponerse a nuevos contagios, ahorrar tiempo y recursos en movilizaci\u00f3n, adem\u00e1s de poder acceder a la atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica oportuna\u201d, explic\u00f3. Asimismo, a pesar de los beneficios de la telemedicina, el Dr. Valderrama reconoce que se trata de un servicio complementario que facilita el acceso a servicios de salud a los pacientes. En este sentido la Red de la UC busca impulsar un modelo de atenci\u00f3n hibrida, que incluya atenciones remotas y presenciales en caso de ser requerido. Esta iniciativa de la UC cuenta no solo con m\u00e9dicos generales, sino tambi\u00e9n con m\u00e9dicos especialistas, y laboratorios para la toma de muestras en diversos lugares de pa\u00eds. El objetivo es lograr mejores diagn\u00f3sticos y acercar la atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica a m\u00e1s personas, especialmente aquellas que habitan en zonas rurales. \u201cYo soy un convencido de que esto lleg\u00f3 para quedarse, y desde las entidades rectoras ha habido un tremendo respaldo. El hecho de dar cobertura para este tipo de atenciones ya es un avance, considero que como pa\u00eds en sentido lo hemos hecho bastante bien.
