The University of Concepci\u00f3n (UdeC) will be in charge of implementing the first Regional Center for Telemedicine and Telehealth in the Biob\u00edo Region in central Chile.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The Telemedicine Unit of the Faculty of Medicine of the UdeC has been operating for more than 15 years, being one of the pioneers of telemedicine in Chile. The objective of the Telemedicine Unit is to improve the services of the regional health system and provide greater and easier access to health services to the inhabitants of the region.<\/p>

The creation of the new Regional Center for Telemedicine and Telehealth in Biob\u00edo has financing of more than 1,800 million from the Innovation Fund for Regional Competitiveness (FIC-R) 2021, delivered by the regional government. Construction of the center will begin in early 2022 and will last three years.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\u201cThis project has the purpose of impacting the entire society of the Biob\u00edo Region and especially in the communities in which we have detected that the gaps in access to health can be shortened through telemedicine and telehealth\u201d, explained the Dr. Ang\u00e9lica Avenda\u00f1o, director of the Telemedicine Unit.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In Chile, most of the medical specialists are in Santiago, so this type of project seeks to bring more and better health services to regions far from the capital. And also prevent patients from having to travel long distances to receive specialized medical care.<\/p>

\u201cTelemedicine and telehealth are a complement and it is not that one type of care is more important than the other, that telemedicine is above face-to-face care or vice versa: they are not competing, but must be integrated and complemented in a process for the benefit of people\u201d, explained Dr. Avenda\u00f1o.<\/p>

The Biob\u00edo Regional Center for Telemedicine and Telehealth seeks to enable the necessary infrastructure so that the health system is strengthened and the population can access specialized health services. "I think it will be very powerful, that it could be replicated and scaled to other regions as well," explains Dr. Avenda\u00f1o, who is also president of the University Telemedicine Network of Chile<\/a> (RUTE-Chile).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

La Universidad de Concepci\u00f3n (UdeC) se encargar\u00e1 de implementar el primer Centro Regional de Telemedicina y Telesalud en la Regi\u00f3n del Biob\u00edo en el centro de Chile. La Unidad de Telemedicina de la facultad de Medicina de la UdeC se encuentra funcionando desde hace m\u00e1s de 15 a\u00f1os, siendo una de las pioneras de la telemedicina en Chile. El objetivo de la Unidad de Telemedicina, es mejorar los servicios del sistema de salud regional y brindar un mayor y m\u00e1s f\u00e1cil acceso a servicios de salud a los pobladores de la regi\u00f3n. La creaci\u00f3n del nuevo Centro Regional de Telemedicina y Telesalud en Biob\u00edo cuenta con un financiamiento de m\u00e1s de 1.800 millones por parte del Fondo de Innovaci\u00f3n para la Competitividad Regional (FIC-R) 2021, entregado por el gobierno regional. A inicios de 2022, comenzar\u00e1 la construcci\u00f3n del centro y tendr\u00e1 una duraci\u00f3n de tres a\u00f1os. \u201cEste proyecto tiene la finalidad de impactar en toda la sociedad de la Regi\u00f3n del Biob\u00edo y sobre todo en las comunidades en las que hemos detectado que las brechas del acceso a la salud se pueden acortar a trav\u00e9s de la telemedicina y telesalud\u201d, explic\u00f3 la Dra. Ang\u00e9lica Avenda\u00f1o, directora de la Unidad de Telemedicina. En Chile, gran parte de los m\u00e9dicos especialistas se encuentran en Santiago, por lo que este tipo de proyectos buscan acercar m\u00e1s y mejores servicios de salud a regiones alejadas de la capital. Y adem\u00e1s evitar que los pacientes deban atravesar largas distancias para recibir atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica especializada. \u201cLa telemedicina y telesalud son un complemento y no se trata de que un tipo de atenci\u00f3n es m\u00e1s importante que la otra, que la telemedicina est\u00e9 sobre la atenci\u00f3n presencial o viceversa: no est\u00e1n compitiendo, sino que deben estar integradas y complementadas en un proceso en beneficio de las personas\u201d, explic\u00f3 la Dra. Avenda\u00f1o. El Centro Regional de Telemedicina y Telesalud del Biob\u00edo, busca habilitar la infraestructura necesaria para que el sistema de salud se vea fortalecido y la poblaci\u00f3n pueda acceder a servicios de salud especializados. “Creo que va a ser muy potente, que podr\u00eda replicarse y escalarse a otras regiones tambi\u00e9n\u201d, explica la Dra.
