The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) published an analysis on the implementation of telemedicine systems in the Americas. <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The document entitled \u201cBarriers and facilitators to the implementation of telemedicine in the Americas\u201d, presents an analysis of the current situation of telemedicine in the Americas; the achievements in the matter in the last decades; challenges and objectives in the new normality after the pandemic; the lessons learned; and opportunities for improvement.<\/p>

\u201cAcademic aspects, public policies, regulations, hospital care and knowledge networks were covered, both in the public and private spheres, with special emphasis on the Region of the Americas,\u201d the document explains.<\/p>

Among the achievements of telemedicine in the Americas, the authors highlight the creation of university telemedicine networks that have facilitated the connection between educational centers, in addition to benefiting local and state systems.<\/p>

They also highlight the participation of patients and their empowerment thanks to digital technologies for health care, especially for the prevention and treatment of diseases, for example, during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>

Another of the advances identified celebrates the inclusion of Digital Health in the Health agendas of national and local Ministries of Health. As well as the use of technologies to streamline procedures related to the provision of medical services.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Regarding the main barriers identified for the adoption of telemedicine in the region, these are classified into five categories:<\/p>

  1. Technological: which includes certification standards, adequate information and communication technology infrastructure and interoperability.<\/li>
  2. Human and Social: privacy, security, integrity and confidentiality.<\/li>
  3. Psychosocial and anthropological: digital gap, in terms of its use and access, organizational culture, professional training, research on real needs and student training.<\/li>
  4. Governance: licenses and registration, gaps, grays and regulatory collisions, and the promotion of laws and regulations that encourage and favor the use of telemedicine.<\/li>
  5. Economic: lack of data and evaluation methodologies for financing services.<\/li><\/ol>

    Regarding the lessons learned during the pandemic, the authors explain that cooperation and collaboration both between institutions and between professionals is key to the implementation of telemedicine strategies. "The transformation of the everyday world is more a function of behavior and change in culture than of technology," the document explains.<\/p>

    The writing of the opinions and the analysis of the document had the participation of specialists from organizations and agencies such as: PAHO; the National Center for Technological Excellence in Health, from Mexico; the Italian Hospital of Buenos Aires; the Inter-American Development Bank; the Ministry of Health of the City of Buenos Aires; Salud.uy, from Uruguay; the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil; the Central American Network of Health Informatics; the Continental University, Peru; the Open University of Catalonia, Spain; the National Network of Education and Research; as well as an international consultant from Colombia.<\/p>

    La Organizaci\u00f3n Panamericana de la Salud (OPS), public\u00f3 un an\u00e1lisis sobre la implementaci\u00f3n de sistemas de telemedicina en el continente americano. El documento titulado “Barreras y facilitadores a la implementaci\u00f3n de la telemedicina en las Am\u00e9ricas\u201d, presenta un an\u00e1lisis de la situaci\u00f3n actual de la telemedicina en Am\u00e9rica; los logros en la materia en las \u00faltimas d\u00e9cadas; desaf\u00edos y objetivos ante la nueva normalidad tras la pandemia; las lecciones aprendidas; y las oportunidades de mejora. \u201cSe cubrieron aspectos acad\u00e9micos, de pol\u00edticas p\u00fablicas, normativos, asistencia hospitalaria y redes de conocimiento tanto del \u00e1mbito p\u00fablico como privado, con especial \u00e9nfasis en la Regi\u00f3n de las Am\u00e9ricas\u201d, explica el documento. Entre los logros de la telemedicina en las Am\u00e9ricas, los autores destacan la creaci\u00f3n de las redes universitarias de telemedicina que han facilitado la conexi\u00f3n entre centros educativos, adem\u00e1s de beneficiar a los sistemas locales y estatales. Tambi\u00e9n destacan la participaci\u00f3n de los pacientes y su empoderamiento gracias a las tecnolog\u00edas digitales para el cuidado de la salud, especialmente para la prevenci\u00f3n y tratamiento de enfermedades, por ejemplo, durante la pandemia de COVID-19. Otro de los avances identificados celebra la inclusi\u00f3n de la Salud Digital en las agendas de Salud de Ministerios de Salud nacionales y locales. As\u00ed como el uso de las tecnolog\u00edas para agilizar tr\u00e1mites relacionados con la prestaci\u00f3n de servicios m\u00e9dicos. En cuanto a las principales barreras identificadas para la adopci\u00f3n de la telemedicina en la regi\u00f3n, estas se encuentran clasificadas en cinco categor\u00edas: Tecnol\u00f3gicas: que incluye est\u00e1ndares de certificaci\u00f3n, infraestructura de tecnolog\u00edas de la informaci\u00f3n y comunicaci\u00f3n adecuadas y la interoperabilidad. Humanas y Sociales: privacidad, seguridad integridad y confidencialidad. Psicosociales y antropol\u00f3gicas: brecha digital, en cuanto a su uso y su acceso, cultura organizacional, capacitaci\u00f3n de profesionales, investigaci\u00f3n de necesidades reales y formaci\u00f3n de estudiantes. Gobernanza: licencias y matriculaci\u00f3n, vac\u00edos, grises y colisiones normativas, y la promoci\u00f3n de leyes y reglamentaci\u00f3n que fomenten y favorecen el uso de telemedicina. Econ\u00f3micas: falta de datos y metodolog\u00edas de evaluaci\u00f3n financiamiento de servicios. En cuanto a las lecciones aprendidas durante la pandemia, los autores explican que la cooperaci\u00f3n y colaboraci\u00f3n tanto entre instituciones como entre profesionales es clave para la implementaci\u00f3n de estrategias de telemedicina. “La transformaci\u00f3n del mundo cotidiano es m\u00e1s funci\u00f3n del comportamiento y cambio en la cultura, que de la tecnolog\u00eda”, explica el documento.
