The Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey's OriGen Project is an initiative that seeks to understand the Mexican genome and discover components within the DNA associated with the most common diseases among the Mexican population and develop strategies.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

TecSalud, from Tec de Monterrey, in collaboration with the National Institute of Genomic Medicine (INMEGEN), will analyze DNA samples from 100,000 Mexicans over the next few years, with the aim of finding answers to the diseases that most affect Mexicans. "Collective information will allow us to find real solutions to the most important health problems in Mexico," said Guillermo Torre, rector of TecSalud, during the presentation.<\/p>

The purpose of this project is to generate a database of genetic information that has the potential to provide rapid and accurate diagnoses of diseases. However, it is a long process that, just for data collection, will cover from 2021 to 2025. The 100,000 Mexicans will be recruited in four stages, 5,000 in 2021-22, 15,000 in 2022-23, 30 thousand in 2023-24, and 50 thousand in 2024-25.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In this way, Project oriGen will have 5 phases:<\/p>

  1. Recruitment: Volunteers must be Mexican and at least 18 years old. All participants must complete a protocol with general information.<\/li>
  2. Sample processing: Samples from volunteers will be obtained from five to six milliliters of blood from the circulatory stream. Later they will be protected and stored in optimal conditions.<\/li>
  3. Genome sequencing: It will be carried out in the Genomic Sequencing Laboratory and will decode the DNA of the volunteers' samples. In this technique, it determines the exact sequence of the four components of the DNA molecule: Adenine (A), Cytosine (C), Guanine (G) and Thymine (T)\u201d, explains TecReview.<\/li>
  4. Bioinformatics process:<\/strong> It will seek to order the information obtained from the sequencing and extract the most relevant data. These data will be correlated with illnesses and diseases for the generation of strategies that allow their prevention or early attention.<\/li>
  5. New research strategies:<\/strong> The final step is to develop prevention strategies for diabetes, cancer, and hypertension.<\/li><\/ol>

    \u201cThere are no studies of this type and of this size in the Latin American population. The existing jobs are from Mexicans or Latinos who have enrolled in American and European projects. There are similar studies available in the rest of the world, but Latin Americans are underrepresented, so the genetic content and its association with diseases in Mexico is going to be novel," said Gerardo Garc\u00eda, director of Translational Research at TecSalud.<\/p>

    El Proyecto oriGen del Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey es una iniciativa que busca conocer el genoma mexicano y conocer componentes dentro del ADN asociados a las enfermedades m\u00e1s comunes entre la poblaci\u00f3n de M\u00e9xico y desarrollar estrategias. Sin embargo, se trata de un proceso largo que tan solo para la recolecci\u00f3n de datos abarcar\u00e1 desde el a\u00f1o 2021 hasta el 2025. Los 100 mil mexicanos ser\u00e1n reclutados en cuatro etapas, 5 mil en 2021-22, 15 mil en 2022-23, 30 mil en 2023-24, y 50 mil en 2024-25. De esta forma Proyecto oriGen contar\u00e1 con 5 fases: Reclutamiento: Los voluntarios deben ser mexicanos y tener al menos 18 a\u00f1os. Todos los participantes deben completar un protocolo con informaci\u00f3n general. Procesamiento de muestras: Las muestras de los voluntarios se obtendr\u00e1n de entre cinco y seis mililitros de sangre del torrente circulatorio. Posteriormente ser\u00e1n resguardadas y almacenadas en condiciones \u00f3ptimas. Secuenciaci\u00f3n del genoma: Se realizar\u00e1 en el Laboratorio de secuenciaci\u00f3n gen\u00f3mica y decodificar\u00e1 el ADN de las muestras de los voluntarios. En esta t\u00e9cnica determina la secuencia exacta de los cuatro componentes de la mol\u00e9cula de ADN: Adenina (A), Citosina (C), Guanina (G) y Timina (T)”, explica TecReview. Proceso de bioinform\u00e1tica: Se buscar\u00e1 ordenar la informaci\u00f3n obtenida de la secuenciaci\u00f3n y extraer los datos m\u00e1s relevantes. Estos datos se correlacionar\u00e1n con padecimientos y enfermedades para la generaci\u00f3n de estrategias que permitan su prevenci\u00f3n o atenci\u00f3n temprana. Nuevas estrategias de investigaci\u00f3n: El paso final es desarrollar estrategias de prevenci\u00f3n para diabetes, c\u00e1ncer e hipertensi\u00f3n. \u201cNo hay estudios de este tipo y de este tama\u00f1o en la poblaci\u00f3n latinoamericana. Los trabajos existentes son de mexicanos o latinos que se han enrolado en proyectos estadounidenses y europeos.
