The Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare of Paraguay reported that through telemedicine services and teleconsultations, they managed to provide care to 92,356 patients nationwide.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Telemedicine services were adopted by the Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare in 2013 and that same year the pilot test of the National Telemedicine System was carried out. Which since 2014 was formalized permanently. However, it was from 2020 as a result of the pandemic that the demand for these services among the population has increased.<\/p>

Thanks to telemedicine, during the health emergency due to COVID-19, it was possible to continue providing services to patients with chronic diseases, whose health centers or offices were affected by social distancing measures. "In 2020, 60 thousand 096 studies were carried out, and so far in 2021, 32 thousand 260, totaling 92 thousand 356 attentions", explained Pedro Galv\u00e1n director of Telemedicine.<\/p>

Galv\u00e1n explained that the 2013 pilot test was carried out in the farthest place with the worst connectivity scenario, after verifying its operation, it was decided to implement the system at a national level. Currently, as explained by the director of Telemedicine in Paraguay, the telemedicine system connects more than 68 communities to the national network, which includes regional and district hospitals and Family Health Units.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The services available through the national telemedicine system since 2014 are tomography, ultrasound, electroencephalography and electrocardiography. The first three are part of the universal coverage services for care in road accidents, cardiovascular diseases, epilepsy, among others.<\/p>

Health Minister Julio Borba has explained the need to continue increasing the level of telemedicine coverage and achieve its equitable application and facilitate its use in vulnerable communities.<\/p>

Use of Artificial Intelligence during the pandemic<\/strong><\/p>

Telemedicine was not the only applied health technology in Paraguay that made significant progress during the pandemic. Artificial Intelligence (AI) was also used in response to the health emergency. In Paraguay, a COVID-19 screening system based on AI and machine learning was developed, diagnostic tests were carried out on healthy people to distinguish from those with possible infections.<\/p>

This technology was combined with telemedicine services to monitor patients. Thus, it was possible to strengthen the diagnostic capacity and make better use of the available resources.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

El Ministerio de Salud P\u00fablica y Bienestar Social de Paraguay inform\u00f3 que a trav\u00e9s de servicios de telemedicina y teleconsultas, lograron brindar atenci\u00f3n a 92 mil 356 pacientes a nivel nacional. Gracias a la telemedicina, durante la emergencia sanitaria por COVID-19, se logr\u00f3 continuar con la prestaci\u00f3n de servicios a pacientes con enfermedades cr\u00f3nicas, cuyos centros de salud o consultorios se vieron afectados por las medidas de distanciamiento social.  \u201cEn el 2020 se realizaron 60 mil 096 estudios, y en lo que va del 2021, 32 mil 260, totalizando 92 mil 356 atenciones\u201d, explic\u00f3 Pedro Galv\u00e1n director de Telemedicina. Galv\u00e1n explic\u00f3 que la prueba piloto de 2013 se realiz\u00f3 en el lugar m\u00e1s alejado con el peor escenario de conectividad, tras comprobar su funcionamiento se opt\u00f3 por la implementaci\u00f3n del sistema a nivel nacional. Actualmente como explica el director de Telemedicina en Paraguay el sistema de telemedicina conecta a m\u00e1s de 68 comunidades a la red nacional, lo que incluye hospitales regionales, distritales y Unidades de Salud de la Familia. Los servicios disponibles a trav\u00e9s del sistema nacional de telemedicina desde el 2014 son tomograf\u00edas, ecograf\u00edas, electroencefalograf\u00edas y electrocardiograf\u00edas. Las tres primeras son parte de los servicios de cobertura universal para la atenci\u00f3n en accidentes viales, enfermedades cardiovasculares, epilepsia, entre otros. El ministro de salud Julio Borba ha explicado la necesidad de continuar aumentando el nivel de cobertura de telemedicina y lograr su aplicaci\u00f3n equitativa y facilitar su uso en comunidades vulnerables. Uso de Inteligencia Artificial durante la pandemia La telemedicina no fue la \u00fanica tecnolog\u00eda aplicada de salud en Paraguay que tuvo un progreso importante durante la pandemia. La Inteligencia Artificial (IA) tambi\u00e9n fue utilizada en respuesta a la emergencia sanitaria. En Paraguay se desarroll\u00f3 de un sistema de cribado de COVID-19 basado en IA y aprendizaje autom\u00e1tico, se realizaron pruebas diagn\u00f3sticas a personas sanas para distinguir de aquellas con posibles contagios. Esta tecnolog\u00eda se combin\u00f3 con los servicios de telemedicina para realizar monitoreo a pacientes. As\u00ed se pudo fortalecer la capacidad de diagn\u00f3stico y aprovechar mejor los recursos disponibles.
