The Inter-American Development Bank published an analysis on the adoption of telemedicine during the pandemic, both in users and in health service providers.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The pandemic has boosted the use of telemedicine throughout the world and Latin America has not been the exception. However, there are important challenges so that telemedicine is not only used as an emergency tool.<\/p>

Before the pandemic, in 2019, in countries like Chile, 65% of their hospitals used telemedicine, however, in hospitals in Argentina, Mexico, Costa Rica or Colombia, telemedicine was used in less than 30%.<\/p>

Other barriers that have limited the scope of telehealth and telemedicine are the lack of regulation and the low investment in communications infrastructure.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In 2020, the health emergency situation, as IDB experts explain, highlighted the virtues of telemedicine. This also made Latin American countries legislate in favor of the use of this care modality, as in Peru, or Argentina, or even in Brazil, although it was a special emergency resolution.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In Argentina, for example, during the pandemic, Congress approved the use of electronic prescriptions and created TeleCovid, a public telemedicine service for remote care of COVID-19 cases.<\/p>

IDB specialists explain that not only did the number of telemedicine users increase, but also the characteristics, such as the average age. In Argentina, the average age of telemedicine users in 2019 was 30 years old, and by 2020 users over 65 years old increased.<\/p>

\u201cTelemedicine, during the pandemic, has made it easier to diagnose patients, helping direct them to the most appropriate health care provider, isolating those who might be infected by the virus, and increasing the capacity of the health system. If the increase in demand for telemedicine services persists, as we hope and wish it will, it could emerge in the long term as a crucial tool for public health management that increases the accessibility of medical care and significantly reduces the time and travel costs to obtain it\u201d, conclude the authors.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

El Banco Interamericano de desarrollo public\u00f3 un an\u00e1lisis sobre la adopci\u00f3n de la telemedicina durante la pandemia, tanto en usuarios como en prestadores de servicios de salud. La pandemia ha potenciado el uso de la telemedicina en todo el mundo y Latinoam\u00e9rica no ha sido la excepci\u00f3n. Sin embargo, existen desaf\u00edos importantes para que la telemedicina no sea solamente utilizada una herramienta de emergencia. En Argentina, por ejemplo, durante la pandemia el Congreso aprob\u00f3 el uso de recetas electr\u00f3nicas y cre\u00f3 TeleCovid, un servicio p\u00fablico de telemedicina para la atenci\u00f3n de casos de COVID-19 a distancia. Los especialistas del BID, explican que no solo increment\u00f3 el n\u00famero de usuarios de telemedicina, tambi\u00e9n las caracter\u00edsticas, como el promedio de edad. En argentina en la edad media de usuarios de telemedicina en 2019 era de 30 a\u00f1os, y para 2020 los usuarios mayores de 65 a\u00f1os aumentaron. \u201cLa telemedicina, durante la pandemia, ha facilitado el diagn\u00f3stico de pacientes, ayudando a dirigirlos al proveedor de atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica m\u00e1s adecuado, a aislar a aquellos que podr\u00edan estar infectados por el virus y a aumentar la capacidad del sistema sanitario.
