Costa Rica has made significant progress in its healthcare system in recent years, having better health coverage and greater social security has achieved great progress in the digitization of its services.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In recent years, the Costa Rican health system has implemented technologies for the management of health services. For example, the Single Digital Health Record (EDUS) and the National Information System and Single Registry of State Beneficiaries (SINIRUBE). However, they are not part of an ecosystem, but rather individual projects that are not interconnected.<\/p>

Also thanks to the connectivity policies through the 5G Route and the arrival of Internet connection to rural areas, it has been possible to increase the offer of telehealth services.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Alejandro Benavides, a specialist in Digital Health and member of the Central American Health Informatics Network (RECAINSA), was interviewed by Health Cluster Net (HCN), a Dutch foundation dedicated to the promotion of innovations, mainly from the European Union. \u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In the interview Benavides explained how the healthcare system is organized in Costa Rica, in which the Ministry of Health acts as the guiding authority and the Costa Rican Social Security Fund manages the public health sector, which provides healthcare services to around 87% of the population. In addition, it also resulted in the work of the private sector as a complement to the public service.<\/p>

Regarding the health emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the acceleration of the digitalization processes, Benavides acknowledged that: \"COVID rightly pointed out that this (digitalization) should have been addressed many years ago\".<\/p>

In 2020, Costa Rica achieved the creation of the Costa Rican Promoter of Innovation and Research, which seeks to promote innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystems in various areas, but especially in health-related issues.<\/p>

Benavides emphasized that \"there has begun to be an evolution, but this requires significant investment, and the right investment. Costa Rica ha logrado avances significativos en su sistema de salud durante los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os, al contar con mejor cobertura sanitaria y mayor seguridad social ha logrado un gran progreso en la digitalizaci\u00f3n de sus servicios. En los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os el sistema de salud de Costa Rica, ha implementado tecnolog\u00edas para la gesti\u00f3n de los servicios de salud. Por ejemplo, el Expediente Digital \u00danico en Salud (EDUS) y el Sistema Nacional de Informaci\u00f3n y Registro \u00danico de Beneficiarios del Estado (SINIRUBE).  Sin embargo, no forman parte de un ecosistema, sino de proyectos individuales no interconectados. Tambi\u00e9n gracias a las pol\u00edticas de conectividad a trav\u00e9s de la Ruta 5G y la llegada de conexi\u00f3n de Internet a zonas rurales, ha sido posible incrementar la oferta de servicios de telesalud. El Ing. Alejandro Benavides, especialista en Salud Digital y miembro de la Red Centroamericana de Inform\u00e1tica en Salud (RECAINSA), fue entrevistado por Health Cluster Net (HCN) una fundaci\u00f3n neerlandesa dedicada a la promoci\u00f3n de las innovaciones principalmente de la Uni\u00f3n Europea.   En la entrevista Benavides explic\u00f3 como est\u00e1 organizado el sistema de salud en Costa Rica, en el que el Ministerio de Salud funciona como eje rector y la Caja Costarricense del Seguro Social gestiona el sector p\u00fablico de salud, que provee el servicio de salud a cerca del 87% de la poblaci\u00f3n. Adem\u00e1s, result\u00f3 tambi\u00e9n el trabajo del sector privado como complemento del servicio p\u00fablico. Con respecto a la emergencia sanitaria por la pandemia de COVID-19 y la aceleraci\u00f3n de los procesos de digitalizaci\u00f3n Benavides reconoci\u00f3 que: \u201cel COVID lleg\u00f3 justamente a se\u00f1alar que eso (la digitalizaci\u00f3n), debi\u00f3 haberse abordado hace muchos a\u00f1os\u201d. En 2020, Costa Rica logr\u00f3 la creaci\u00f3n de la Promotora Costarricense de Innovaci\u00f3n e Investigaci\u00f3n que busca la promoci\u00f3n de ecosistemas de innovaci\u00f3n y emprendimiento en diversas \u00e1reas, pero especialmente en temas relacionados a salud. Benavides resalt\u00f3 que \u201cha comenzado a haber una evoluci\u00f3n, pero esto requiere inversi\u00f3n importante, y una inversi\u00f3n correcta.
