In addition, technological development has given patients the opportunity to rely on technologies to improve their treatments. The study included the review of six online databases: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, CINAHL and Web of Science, for the search of scientific articles focused on the use of technologies for the management and treatment of diabetes.<\/p><p>The review followed the PRISMA guidelines (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) to assess the scope of the literature. The search strategy in the previously mentioned databases established that the following English terms should appear in the title or abstract of the article: \u201cDiabetes Mellitus\u201d OR \u201cdiabetes\u201d OR \u201cblood glucose assessment\u201d AND \u201cTelemedicine\u201d OR \u201cMobile Applications\u201d OR \u201cdigitization\u201d OR \u201cdigital treatment\".<\/p><p>\u201cStudies published in English or German between January 2008 and January 2020 that focused on technologies in DM therapy were included. Furthermore, to be included, the studies had to make remarks or comments on the clinical effectiveness, for example, effect on glycemic control, of the type of technology that was presented.\u201d, the authors explained.<\/p><p>The search returned 4,935 results for studies that used any of the following types of technology: glucose monitoring systems, insulin pens, insulin pumps, closed-loop systems, mHealth apps, telemedicine, and electronic medical records.<\/p><p>The authors noted the following for each of the electronic or digital technologies:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Glucose monitoring system<\/strong>: Continuous Glucose Monitoring systems measure the glucose level at regular intervals, 24 hours a day, and translate the measurements into data about glucose direction and rate of change.<\/li><li><strong>Insulin pumps:<\/strong>: Small programmable computerized devices that allow continuous subcutaneous insulin infusions, so a more physiological insulin release can be mimicked. This is realized by an individual basal insulin rate, which is released hourly and set by the medical staff.<\/li><li><strong>Telemedicine<\/strong>: provides scope for various interventions, such as phone coaching interventions, tele-education, teleconsultations, real-time transmission of blood glucose levels, and web-based case management programs.<\/li><li><strong>mHealth App<\/strong>: Common features include tracking of blood glucose levels or insulin usage, calculating an insulin dose, monitoring of diet, weight or physical activity, providing education, or allowing communication and exchange of data with health care professionals or social networks.<\/li><li><strong>Electronic Medical Records (EMR)<\/strong>: The use of EMR offers the opportunity to transfer data of diabetes technology, such as glucose monitoring systems, insulin pumps, or insulin pens, directly to the patients\u2019 medical records. This makes everyday life in primary health care easier and is a step toward an automated institution.<\/li><\/ul><p>\u201cIn general, the different types of diabetes technologies offer a chance to individualize diabetology and improve the health and QoL of people with DM. With a look at the great advances that have been made in the last few years, rapid further development of diabetes technologies can be expected. In particular, the opportunity to connect different devices to create an automated insulin delivery will become more important. La revisi\u00f3n: \u201cDiabetolog\u00eda 4.0: revisi\u00f3n del alcance de nuevas perspectivas y posibilidades que ofrece la digitalizaci\u00f3n\u201d, tuvo como objetivo \u201cproporcionar una visi\u00f3n general de las tecnolog\u00edas de diabetes actualizadas disponibles y las posibilidades que ofrece la digitalizaci\u00f3n del tratamiento de la diabetes mellitus (DM)\u201d. El estudio presenta el panorama actualizado sobre las tecnolog\u00edas disponibles, as\u00ed como los nuevos acercamientos y posibilidades para la terapia diabetes 4.0 como se refieren los autores. El estudio incluy\u00f3 la revisi\u00f3n de seis bases de datos en l\u00ednea: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, CINAHL y Web of Science, para la b\u00fasqueda de art\u00edculo cient\u00edficos enfocados en el uso de tecnolog\u00edas para el control y tratamiento de la diabetes. Los autores apuntaron lo siguiente de cada una de las tecnolog\u00edas electr\u00f3nicas o digitales: Sistemas de control de glucosa: Los sistemas de control continuo de glucosa miden el nivel de glucosa a intervalos regulares, las 24 horas del d\u00eda, y traducen las mediciones en datos sobre la direcci\u00f3n de la glucosa y la tasa de cambio. Bombas de insulina: Peque\u00f1os dispositivos computarizados programables que permiten infusiones continuas de insulina subcut\u00e1nea, por lo que se puede imitar una liberaci\u00f3n de insulina m\u00e1s fisiol\u00f3gica. Esto se logra mediante una tasa de insulina basal individual, que se libera cada hora y es establecida por el personal m\u00e9dico. Con una mirada a los grandes avances que se han logrado en los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os, se puede esperar un r\u00e1pido desarrollo de las tecnolog\u00edas de la diabetes. En particular, la oportunidad de conectar diferentes dispositivos para crear una administraci\u00f3n de insulina automatizada ser\u00e1 m\u00e1s importante. Sin embargo, para utilizar todo el potencial de la digitalizaci\u00f3n, se deben crear regulaciones y leyes para establecer est\u00e1ndares y garantizar la seguridad de los datos\u201d, concluye la publicaci\u00f3n.
